Virginia AAA State Golf Tournament

Oakton Senior Danny Kim Wins the Group AAA Individual Title; Chantilly Takes Second in the Team Competition

Oakton senior Danny Kim was one stroke off the lead entering the second
round of the Virginia AAA State Golf tournament at Dominion Valley in
Haymarket. Jason Chun of Frank  W. Cox  High School in Richmond shot a
4-under-par 68 to hold the lead over Kim and All-Met Jake An of
Chantilly who finished day one with a 71.

An won both the Concorde District and Northern Region titles this year.

With
Oakton not competing in the team competition Kim’s tee time was quite a
bit earlier than his competitors. He posted a 70 on Day 2 — the final
day of competition — then grabbed a bite to eat and waited for his
competitors to trickle in.

“I was nervous the whole time,” Kim
said. “I knew there were a lot of good people that just made the turn
that could shoot low numbers.”

But his time proved well worth the wait. Kim’s two-day total of 139 was enough to hold off Nick Austin’s (James River) 140 and An’s 142 to give him the Group AAA individual state title.

The
team competition prove equally exciting as Westfield entered Day 2 only
one stroke behind Cox in the team competition, combining their top four
scores for a 298. Chantilly trailed by six, posting a 303 coming off of
winning the Northern Region Championship last week at Fairfax National
in Centreville.

Oakton senior Danny Kim, who captured the Virginia Group AAA individual golf championship, is congratulated by Chantilly Director of Athletics Terry Brown.

With a pair of 72’s from Ji Soo Park and Victor Monte the Chargers were able to close the gap and finish in second place (599). Westfield used steady team play from Tim Ritter, Brian Keith, Jack Debell and Chris Vigotsky to place third (600). Cox held on to win the team championship with a 594.

Other individual standouts include: Brigitte Baker (Langley) 75-75-150; Lauren Greenlief (Oakton) 74-77-151; Josh Apple (Stone Bridge) 74-76-150; Brian Jaeger (Langley) 78-76-154 and Kenny Towns (Lake Braddock) 82-86-168.
