Oakton began its game Monday night against rival Chantilly by going on a 10-0 run, and the Cougars held that margin through most of the game to defeat the visiting Chargers, 54-46, to remain undefeated in Concorde District play.

“It means a lot,” fresham sensation Zora Stephenson said of her teams’ hot start. “A win is a win. Every game is a new game and you can’t dwell on the past.”

Stephenson poured in 14 points on the night, hitting four three-pointers along the way.

Chantilly, led by junior guard Lisa Comerford and senior guard Lauren Gural, put constant pressure on the Oakton defense, but proved unable to pull any closer than five points. Comerford led the Chargers (7-4, 1-2) with a game-high 20 points, while Gural added 10.

The Cougars (12-1, 3-0) spread the ball around all night and effectively used the inside-out game, led by guard Erin McGartland and senior guard Mandy Johnston, who scored 12 and eight points, respectively.

“We were really well prepared,” Oakton senior captain Jackie Shewmaker said. “We had a good scouting report on Chantilly. We had a lot of new stuff we put in. We ran it really well and everyone did really good.”

Oakton will try to continue its winning ways Thursday night at Herndon; Chantilly also plays Thursday against visiting Robinson.
