The best women basketball players from Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties met Sunday at Oakton high school in the fifth annual Suburban Classic All-Star game.

The first game matched the Concorde and Patriot Districts All-Stars from the Northern Region against the Prince William County All-Stars from the Northwest Region. University of Virginia-bound guard Ariana Moorer from Hylton High School earned team MVP after leading the Northwest All-Stars in scoring with 18 points en route to a 79-60 victory. Westfield senior Amanda O’Neil scored 13 points to garner MVP honors for the Northern Region squad.

The second game saw all-stars from the National and Liberty Districts square off against all-stars from Loudoun County. The inside game of Madison senior Marygrace Jay and W.T. Woodson senior Sara Schoof proved to be too much as the stars from the Northern Region prevailed, 67-54. Warhawks’ senior Katie Wimmer scored 14 point to earn team MVP honors for the Northern Region All-Stars, and Alexis Campbell took similar honors for the Loudoun standouts after leading the team with 12 points.

Boys’ Soccer: Lake Braddock 2, Chantilly 1

By Phil Murphy
Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

**Re-live Tuesday night’s game in seven minutes with the video player below the story**

Lake Braddock’s boys’ soccer tryouts commenced nearly a month ago.

By this point in the season, most soccer teams in the Northern Region have played in several scrimmages and at least a pair of regular-season games. But prior to their 2-1 win at Chantilly on Tuesday, the Bruins had not played once.

A mixture of inclement weather and unplayable field conditions have kept the perennial Region front-runners from collectively taking the field in a competitive environment. Thus, 11th-year coach Joe Soos was forced to simplify the Bruins’ game plan.

“There are only two things we’ve been working on,” Soos said. “We’ve been working on defending and we’ve been working on finishing.”

Despite its 2008 greenness, Lake Braddock adhered to that approach perfectly in the first half against at Chantilly. Junior forward Diego Colchao immediately capitalized on a seventh-minute turnover by the Chargers in their own own end to grab an early 1-0 lead.

That lead doubled in the 40th minute — mere seconds before the half-time whistle — when senior substitute Georgi Iskrenov tucked a Percy Rojas cross inside the left post with his head.

“Overall, I’m satisfied,” said Soos, ensconced in innumerable layers of clothing to combat the chilling, early-spring temperatures and wind. “Chantilly is a good opponent and a good test for us. I’m happy to walk away with a win.”

But the young Chargers, fielding only four seniors on their 20-man roster, demonstrated resolve in the second half. And the disparity in competitive experience this season became apparent as the Chantilly (0-3) held visiting Lake Braddock (1-0) without a shot on goal after the half, while having three itself.

After threatening the Bruins with several scoring chances, the Chargers leveraged an offensive opportunity in the 62nd minute. Sophomore defender Kevin McBride poked a loose ball beyond the reach of senior Lake Braddock keeper Chris Eilers to cut the Bruin lead to a single goal.

“The second half could have been better,” Soos said, pointing to what was the Chargers’ late-game attacking end. “Chantilly did a great job in the second half and probably deserved, maybe, a tie. It could have gone to a tie.”

Twelve minutes after his goal, McBride had the best chance to equalize in the final moments. He was left vacated atop the six-yard box, but his header sailed harmlessly over the bar.

After the near-costly miscue, Lake Braddock’s defense maintained its form to preserve the long-overdue, season-opening victory.

But, for Soos, it was not lost that the win nearly slipped away.

“There were stretches where, I don’t know if it was a lack of fitness or a lack of focus, but we struggled,” he said. “It’s so early. Things are never the same at the end as they are in the beginning. There are changes, there are injuries, so what can we can better at?

“We have to sustain a higher level of play throughout the whole game.”

2008 DigitalSports Basketball Showcase is Big Success

By Angela Watts

** Highlights added! Look below the story for three separate video players showing highlights from all three of Saturday night’s events.**

The best Northern Region boy’s basketball players took center stage at Mount Vernon High School Saturday evening for the first annual DigitalSports Basketball Showcase.

More than 600 fans filed into Skinner Field House to watch 49 different Northern Region players representing 24 of the area’s 30 schools participate in the three-and-a-half hour event that included a three-point shootout, a slam dunk contest and an All-Star game.

It even took two extra periods to decide the All-Star game, as the Liberty/National District All-Stars, led by Langley Coach Travis Hess, edged the Patriot/Concorde District All-Stars, led by T.C. Williams state champion Coach Ivan Thomas, 111-108, in double overtime. The game was filled with high-flying dunks, sharp-shooting from the outside and well-timed passes, but it was — perhaps fittingly — Major senior Marquel De Lancey who took home MVP honors after leading his squad to victory on his home floor. De Lancey scored all 20 of his team-high points after half time.

The field of three-point shooters was whittled from 26 competitors to down to two finalists — W.T. Woodson senior Coleman Bacon and South Lakes senior Curtis Keys. They squared off in a head-to-head competition that looked as if it might also end in a tie, but Keys drained the three-point “money” ball on his final rack to narrowly defeat Bacon, 10-8.

The night’s final event saw the field of slam dunkers reduced from 11 to two, pitting South Lakes senior Jay Bowman against Annandale senior Erik Etherly in one final head-to-head battle with two dunks each. The pair stood knotted at 46 after one dunk each (the maximum score was 50), but Etherly garnered three more points from the judges on his final dunk for the 93-90 win.
