Playoff Baseball: Northern Region Championship Game

Check below the story for video highlights from Fridays Championship game.

The umpires from Saturday night’s Northern Region baseball championship game between Lake Braddock and Chantilly huddled in the parking lot behind the right/field fence at Yorktown High after the game rehashing the critical moments of the Bruins’ 9-6 victory over the Chargers.

At the forefront of the conversation was what proved to be the game-changing play in the deciding fifth inning. Lake Braddock, with the bases loaded and two outs, trailed Chantilly 6-4 when senior centerfielder Shane Halley hit a high fly ball that seemed to linger above the second baseman’s head for several minutes.

“I couldn’t find the ball,” one of the field umpires told his colleagues. “Then I looked down at the second baseman and saw his head swiveling like a bobble-head … and I realized he couldn’t see it either.”

The ball got lost in the lights and eventually fell just behind the second baseman, allowing all three base-runners to score to turn a two-run deficit to a one-run lead. Lake Braddock’s next batter — senior Bruin Shannon Mark — then belted a two-run, home run over the right field fence for a 9-6 advantage.

“I got lucky,” said Halley, who will play next season for the University of Virginia. “I got really lucky. Chris [Yates] made a great pitch, I just missed it and got really lucky. Thats all I can say.”

Lake Braddock led 2-1 after three innings, but Chantilly took its first lead of the game in the top of the fourth inning when senior Patrick Moore hit a leadoff homer to dead centerfield that was followed by a Chris Yates walk and another home run by senior Brian King.

The Bruins responded with a solo shot from second baseman Ryan Buckrop in the bottom half of the inning, but the Chargers rallied again, scoring two more runs in the fifth. Chantilly catcher Keith Morrisroe hit a two-run shot that scored senior Chris Gentile, pushing the Chargers’ lead to three before the Lake Braddock’s big, six-run fifth inning.

Sophomore pitcher Ryan Lindemuth entered the game in the fifth inning and recorded five of the games’ final six outs on strikeouts.

“I felt really comfortable because I was throwing to my brother,” said Lindemuth, whose brother Steven is the Bruins’ starting catcher. “I have been throwing to him for five years now. It was like we were throwing in the front yard.”

The Bruins will play Tuesday night at home against Indian River in the first round of the Virginia AAA state tournament. Chantilly, meanwhile, travels to Old Dominion University on Tuesday where it will face Bethel High School at 6 p.m.

Playoff Baseball: Northern Region Semifinals

Check below the story for highlights from both games in separate video players

The top two teams in the Patriot and Concorde Districts squared off Wednesday night at South County for a berth not only into the Northern Region title game but, more importantly, into next weeks Virginia AAA state tournament. As it turned out, it was the two district champions who sealed that fate.

Lake Braddock extended its win streak to 18 games by beating Oakton, 7-2, in the first game of the semifinal doubleheader, and Chantilly similarly advanced for the first time in school history with a 5-4 victory over West Springfield.

The Cougars scored both of their runs in the first two innings and were shut down for the remainder of the game by the Bruin junior left-handed pitcher Brian Derner. Derner threw the complete game, striking out eight and retiring the defending Northern Region champions in order in the last three innings.

Offensively, the big Bruin blow came in the fifth inning when they posted six runs.

Senior Shane Halley doubled to start the inning and immediately scored when senior Shannon Mark tripled to right/centerfield. Seniors’ Steven Lindeman and Jim Buckley then hit back-to-back singles — Buckley’s scored Mark — before senior Jordan Tiamson hit a three-run home run that put Lake Braddock ahead by three.

“It was a 2-0 count, I was looking for a fastball and he laid one right there,” Tiamson said.

Brendan Daley followed with a double and scored on a single by freshman Kenny Towns. Daley also singled in the sixth and scored on a Ryan Buckrop sacrifice fly.

Oakton was led by seniors Keith Werman and Connor Madden, who combined for five hits and scored both runs.

In the second game Chantilly, which has relied on its pitching for most of the season, proved Wednesday was no different as it sent Concorde District Pitcher of the Year Patrick Somers to the hill in the seasons’ most important game. Somers battled all night and got out of two jams which ultimately proved to be the difference in the ballgame.

The Spartans first threatened in the fourth inning when they loaded the bases with one out and the Chargers clinging to a 3-2 lead. Somers made the pitch he needed and got a ground ball to shortstop Chris Yates, who promptly started a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play.

The play of the game, however, came in the seventh inning while the Spartans were mounting a near comeback. Down one with two outs and a man on first, sophomore Bobby Wahl lined a shot to right field where Chantilly junior Joe Danehower scooped it up, crow hopped and threw a strike to senior third baseman Max Langford, who was waiting to tag out the runner for the game’s final out.

“Joe has been doing it in practice all year long,” Somers said. “He is clutch. That is just a prime example of what he can do.”

Offensively the Chargers were led by junior Danny Philips, who pinch hit and knocked in a run in the last inning, senior Chris Gentile, who had two RBIs, and junior Brian King, who scored two runs.

Chantilly and Lake Braddock will meet in the Northern Region Championship Friday night at Yorktown.

Playoff Baseball: Northern Region Quarterfinals

By Phil Murphy

**Check below the game story for a video player with complete game highlights and post-game footage. Re-live it all in 12 min, 30 sec!!**

Chantilly 7, South County 2

When Chantilly first-team All-Region catcher Keith Morrisroe was called back to the batters’ box after an apparent hit by pitch against South County, he could not have been happier.

Well, at least, not after the next pitch.

Morrisroe stroked a triple into the gap – plating senior Max Langford – one pitch after the home-plate umpire ruled that Morrisroe leaned into the inside pitch that clipped his elbow.

The extra-base hit was part of nine-hit surge in the final three
innings for the Chargers, who powered by the Stallions, 7-2, in the
second game at Robinson High on Memorial Day.

“I know I leaned into it, but I just started sprinting to first,” said
Morrisroe, whose aptitude for making contact far surpasses his acting
ability. “I heard all the opposing parents cheering, so I knew they
were going to call me back. I got all curve balls every other pitch. A
fastball came and I hit it the other way.

“I told the umpire thanks afterwards for that.”

Through three innings, though, it appeared as if the latter half of
Monday’s doubleheader would be a repeat of the early-afternoon
defensive showcase between Robinson and West Springfield.

South County led Concorde District champion Chantilly, 1-0, and the Chargers were a combined 2-for-12 at the plate.

“We didn’t know a whole lot about them,” said Stallion Coach Mark Luther,
who led South County to the Patriot District title in the school’s first two seasons of
existence. “We had never really seen them. We knew they put balls in
play. But just watching them on video on [Digital Sports] and
listening to people, we knew they put the bat on the baseball and you
have to make plays.

“They were getting used to Peyton [Bartlett] … He
certainly does a great job, mixes his pitches pretty well. But once you
get through him one time, he’s certainly hittable when he’s not hitting
his spots. But they’re a good hitting team, they put balls in play. And
that’s a big part of high-school baseball, not getting punched out.”

Added Charger Coach Kevin Ford: “A couple of the guys were a
little too anxious. We still can’t get them relax and just play. That’s
kind of what we’ve been preaching. Each game that we move onto here, if
we just play our game, we’ll be okay.”

And when the Chantilly bats came out of hibernation, its pitching stayed locked in.

Starter Jordan Johnson and reliever Chris Yates pitched
all seven innings, combining to allow two earned runs on seven hits,
while striking out six Stallions. Yates accounted for five strikeouts
in his three innings of work.

“I was hoping we were going to swing the bat and I was hoping we’d get
a good outing on the mound by both of our guys,” Ford said. “We’ve gone
here at the end of year with starting Jordan and then going to Chris. Jordan has pitched in very few games here lately and we got pretty
much what we wanted out of him. He gave up a run and gave us four
innings and we were able to go to Chris.”

With the Patriot District three-seed out of the way, Chantilly advances
to the Regional semifinals where it will play Patriot runner-up West Springfield.

The game – scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Yorktown – will feature All-Region pitchers Mike Kent (Spartans) and Pat Somers (Chargers) with a berth in the Virginia AAA state tournament at stake.

“[That game] is probably going to be lower scoring than this,” Ford
said. “I’ve heard a lot of things about that kid. I haven’t seen him
pitch, but I don’t think you really need to from what people say.

“We’re just going to have to come out and execute. There were one or
two times tonight we didn’t execute. Against a really good pitcher like
that, you are going to have to.”

Girls’ Lacrosse Northern Region Championship: Oakton 14, Chantilly 12

By Angela Watts
Managing Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

** Look below the story to find dozens of video highlights — plus a post-game interview with Oakton senior standout Ashley Kimener — from Wednesday’s Northern Region title game.

A storm blew in and hovered overhead at South County during half time of the Northern Region girls’ lacrosse championship on Wednesday night.

But those clouds that opened up to drop rain — and the winds that whipped throughout the stadium — had nothing on Hurricane Ashley, which proved a whirlwind on the field.

Oakton senior standout Ashley Kimener, who totaled nine goals in the game, including three in a mere :42 seconds in the opening minute of the second half, almost single-handedly led the Cougars to a 14-12 victory over the Chargers to secure its second consecutive regional title.

Chantilly entered the game with a 15-1 mark and two regular-season wins over Oakton under its belt. But the young Cougars (10-6), who returned only four seniors from a team that captured the Virginia AAA championship each of the past two seasons, have finally come of age.

“For us to get to this point, it just shows the incredible amount of work that these girls have put in,” Oakton Coach Jean Counts said. “Together, as a unit, they’ve developed team chemistry and cohesiveness — the stuff that being on a high school team is all about. They know it’s going to be over so soon … every game we win, we’re so grateful we have one more game together to practice. And with every practice this team is just getting better.”

Trailing 7-4 at the break, Oakton came out firing in the second half of play. Kimener was as the forefront of the attack, scoring at the 22:43, 22:32 and 22:01 mark to immediately knot the score at 7.

Kimener was so focused on the run she didn’t even stop to celebrate after the goals, instead turning to spring back to midfield to handle the next face-off.

The Cougars got another unanswered goal by sophomore midfielder Jackie Alexander with 20:51 to play to take it first lead since the opening goal at 8-7 and did not trail again. Chantilly knotted the score only once at 8 with 20:18 remaining on one of four goals by junior midfielder Brittany Griel, but Oakton regained the lead less than two minutes later on yet another Kimener score and never looked back.

Cougars’ senior goal keeper Tory Morgan proved impenetrable in the closing minutes, not allowing the Chargers to score in the last five-and-a-half minutes of play, including stopping several point-blank shots.

“We knew we could keep up with them, it was just a matter of time in the other games,” Kimener said. “If we had a few more minutes we would have won those games as well, but the time ran out. … But this game meant a lot to us. We wanted this regional title.”

Oakton, despite perhaps still being the underdog, would also like to successfully defend its back-to-back Virginia AAA titles. The Cougars will host the No. 3 seed from the Northwest Region on Saturday, May 31 in the eight-team state tournament field. Chantilly, meanwhile, will face the No. 2 seed out of Region II, with the site and time to be announced.

Westfield, which defeated W.T. Woodson in Wednesday’s consolation final to earn the region’s third and final state tournament berth, will travel to face the No. 1 seed from the Northwest Region, also on Saturday.

“This year we had to prove so much more,” Counts said. “It started with our first loss to Westfield. They beat us 14-10 fair-and-square, and that was kind of the beginning of a long regular season. And so we’ve re-evaluated what we need to do for the playoffs and we’ve re-focused and are patient and are being smart and we’re playing good basics.

“I give a lot of credit to the girls … just to show that they are fearless and will go out there and do whatever they can for each other.”

Including, as Kimener proved, be a one-woman storm for her teammates.

Boys’ Lacrosse Northern Region Championships: Chantilly 8, Oakton 6

By Jimmy Thomas
Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

Check below the story for complete highlights of the championship game

Chantilly’s boys’ lacrosse team rallied from a fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Oakton, 8-6, and capture its first Northern Region championship in school history. With the win — the Chargers’ third over the Cougars this season — they remain undefeated on the season headed into next week’s Virginia AAA state tournament.

With 4 minutes, 40 seconds remaining in the game, senior midfielder Kevin Oneill took a pass from senior defender Mike Quigg and scored, putting the Chargers in the lead for the first time all night. Two minutes later senior attack Corey Aferiat beat the goaltender for one final score as the clock wound to :00 and Chantilly secured its victory.

The Cougars held a one-goal lead six different times during the game but each time the Chargers answered to knot the score.

Senior midfielder Rob Koster scored two go-ahead goals for Oakton in the third quarter, but Charger senior attack Joe Fratter answered each goal with one of his own. Fratter added a third score early in the fourth quarter to give him a hat-trick and tie the game at 5.

Aferiat also scored again in the third quarter, as did Chantilly senior midfielder Jake Nolan and sophomore attack Brendan Waters.

“They got challenged tonight” Chantilly Coach Kevin Broderick said of his players. “They rose to that challenge and they were fortunate to come away with a win. This will give us a lot of momentum going into states.”

The first round of the state tournament begins Saturday, May 31st.

Chantilly, as a top seed, will host the No. 3 seed from the Northwest Region while Oakton will play the No. 2 seed from Region II with the site and time to be determined. Annandale, which defeated Westfield in the consolation game to earn the Northern Region’s third and final berth, will travel to face at the No. 1 seed from the Northwest Region.

Boys’ Playoff Lacrosse: Northern Region Semifinals

By Greg Young
Annandale High School School, DigitalSports Intern

** Look below the story to find two separate video players filled with dozens of highlights from both of Monday’s Northern Region semifinal games.**

Chantilly’s motto for the year, “One more!” may have to be adjusted slightly.

Although the basic point remains — that the Chargers want to get one more ground ball, one more hit, one more shot and one more goal then their opponents — the phrase does not fully encompass Chantilly’s dominance this season. That’s because the Chargers have gotten several more ground balls, hits, shots and goals then its opponents all season.

That remained true Monday night as Chantilly continued its complete romp through the Northern Region tournament with a 13-3 win over Westfield in the second half of a Northern Region semifinal doubleheader at tournament host South County.

The Chargers dominated the Bulldogs from the start, opening with a 9-0 run that spanned all but a minute of the first half. Senior attack Kevin O’Neill did the brunt of the damage, registering a hat-trick midway through the first quarter and finishing with a game-high five goals. Chantilly also got a pair of scores from senior attack Joseph Fratter and senior midfielder Ian Mills.

“We wanted to come out with a purpose,” said Chargers’ Coach Kevin Broderick. “Our offense executed very well today.”

Meanwhile, in the matinée game, Oakton rallied from a two-goal deficit at half time to defeat Annandale, 12-6.

“Our motto is [to] have heart and hustle … and we had no hustle in the first half,” Oakton Coach Tony Gray said. “In the second half, we picked up the intensity.”

The Cougars were led offensively by senior attack James McClellan with three goals while senior midfielder Will Harris and Rob Koster added two goal a piece.

“A big part [of the second half run] was the defense,” Harris said. “I have to give the second half to them.”

With the wins, Oakton and Chantilly advance to the Northern Region championship game at 7 p.m. Wednesday at South County. At stake — in additional to the region crown — is the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the upcoming Virginia AAA state tournament.

Chantilly, which remains undefeated on the season, defeated Oakton, 9-3, in their lone regular-season meeting and again, 9-7, last week in the Concorde District title game. That second meeting proved the Chargers narrowest margin-of-victory this season.

“We need to play our game and execute very well,” Broderick said. “We need to come out early and execute well.”

Annandale and Westfield, meanwhile, will also square off in the consolation match on Wednesday at Lake Braddock. The winner will earn the region’s third — and final — berth into the state tournament field.

“We have to just focus on getting better in the ground-ball game,” Annandale Coach William Maglisceau said. “We also have to be fundamentally sound.”
