DigitalSports’ 2008 Scholarship Winners Are Honored

By Angela Watts
Managing Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

During half time of Friday’s Northern Region Classic, three Northern Region students — and one student-athlete — were awarded $1,000 scholarships from DigitalSports.

Recent Westfield graduate David Kruchko was selected as the Applause Scholarship winner, which was awarded to the Northern Region student-athlete who overcame the most adversity to excel both on the field and in the classroom.

During his junior season against Langley, Kruchko suffered such a severe break in his leg that doctors feared he might not walk again. This A-student underwent multiple surgeries and missed a couple months of school before returning to Westfield and to the Bulldogs’ football program.

This past year Kruchko was one
of the stars of the Westfield team that went undefeated en route to capturing the
Virginia AAA Division 6 state championship.

He finished the season with 41 receptions for 518 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Kruchko, who is planning to try and walk on at Virginia Tech this fall, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship to help further his education.

DigitalSports also awarded three, $1,000 Media Scholarships to the Northern Region students who contributed the best content on the most consistent basis to DigitalSports.com.

The winner for the Fall sports season was rising Robinson senior Eric Avissar, who has yet to decide on a future college. The winner for the Winter sports season was recent Westfield graduate Jessica Lloyd, who will pursue her college education at Virginia Tech. And the winner for the Spring sports season was recent Annandale graduate Greg Young, who will continue his journalism studies at the University of Missouri.

2008 Northern Region Classic: West 44, East 23

By Angela Watts
Managing Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

**Check below the story to see highlights from Friday’s game. There are two separate video players, one for each half. Post-game interviews are at the bottom of the second half clips.**

There are a number of unforgettable images that could easily define Friday’s 4th Annual Northern Region Football Classic.

For starters, the game was held under a gorgeous sky and in perfectly cool, early-summer temperatures at West Springfield High. Then there were the bevy of spectacular plays from members of both teams despite the West’s overall dominance in its 44-23 victory over the East.

Included in that list were two jaw-dropping catches by former Edison standout wide receiver Ben Barber, the West MVP, and two surprising touchdown passes by former Lake Braddock standout wide receiver Keon Robinson, the East MVP.

There was also a 51-yard field goal by East standout Tyler Bitancurt (West Springfield) that sailed through the uprights despite a wobbly hold.

And there were defensive scores by West linebacker Mike Quigg (Chantilly) and defensive end Jamey McClendon (Centreville) and a few blistering hits, the notably of which came via West linebacker Donnell Carpenter (Centreville), who just might have stolen the MVP honors if not for Barber’s antics.

But what the hundreds of fans who piled into the stadium talked about most wasn’t any of that. What caught everyone’s attention was the stickers on the players’ helmets. Though they donned East and West jerseys and pants, the players were asked to wear their own schools’ helmets. And they did — sort of.

But in a show of camaraderie with their new teammates — and of some of their opponents, too — they also represented much more.

Take Barber, for example, whose Edison helmet was also decorated with stickers from Centreville, Hayfield, Robinson, West Potomac, West Springfield and Yorktown.

“This game was about having fun and about representing the Northern Region … and I had fun playing in it,” said Barber, who has committed to Virginia Tech. “For me, I was back out there at my natural position and I just enjoyed being with the guys and with the coaches. And we pulled out the victory, so that made it even better.”

The West, led by rotating quarterbacks Austin Decker (Chantilly) and Billy Samson (Westfield), jumped to a 31-3 at half time and extended that margin to 38-3 early in the fourth quarter on a circus catch by Barber, who went up against smothering East defenders Tim Baldwin and Richard DeMocker of West Springfield and somehow came down with the ball.

The East team rallied with three touchdowns in the final 4:01 of play — including one touchdown catch by Robinson and two more touchdown tosses from Robinson to Robert Byrd (West Potomac) and Josh Earl (Marshall).

“I just asked if I could play quarterback,” said the Shepherd University-bound Robinson, who was listed as a wide receiver, defensive back and kick returner. “They told me before the game started that I might be able to a couple of times … and I did and I threw two touchdowns. How crazy is that! But it was was fun. I really enjoyed this game, despite the outcome.

“These guys are all all-stars, so they were easy to play with, and everyone definitely had a good sense of humor.”

But although it was entertaining, particularly Robinson’s pass to Earl as time expired, is wasn’t truly indicative of the flow the game.

The Northern Region Classic, because of its all-star format, has several different rules, including one that states that during the second half of play, a team trailing by 18 points or more that has just scored will receive the ensuing kickoff. That left the East with four consecutive offensive possessions to end the game.

Other rules changes limit defensive formations that can be used, prohibit more than four players from rushing the kicker and require teams to have passed the ball on 50 percent of its plays or more at the end of each quarter.

“The biggest thing about the rules is that you only have three days of practice to teach the kids,” Game Director and West coach Brian Day said. “So you try to put the rules in place to make game fan-friendly, to protect the kids and to make the game itself a better game. There is some great high school talent in Northern Virginia and I think you see that in just how the interest in this game is growing. Plus, we’ve all been sitting home since December so I think we were all itching for some football.

“But we’re really trying to make this game about us — about the Northern Region. And it’s a great thing to be a part of.”

NOVA U-19 WINS FIRST-EVER VIRGINIA RUGBY TITLE

By Ryan Mink
rmink@digitalsports.com

Gareth Willatt grew up around rugby. His father played when he was in high school in his native England and Willatt, a senior at Oakton, was often exposed to the game both in trips overseas and watching it on television.

But none of that fully prepared Willatt for what he did Saturday. For despite all of his experience, the most of any player on the field, Willatt was perhaps the most nervous.

He was about to star in Virginia’s first-ever unofficial state championship rugby game as part of the Virginia Rugby organization. The game was played at South County High School in Fairfax County in the football stadium with more than 100 spectators.

Willatt and his NOVA U-19 team, the largest club in Virginia, still came out victorious, defeating the expansion Western Suburbs U-19 club, 15-10, claiming the first trophy in a league that is hoping to bring the sport of rugby to the mainstream high school sports playing field.

“It was a pretty big deal,” Willatt said. “Playing in a football stadium, it’s pretty nerve-wracking. … It means the world to me, actually. It’s one of the highlights of my rugby career, to play in a state final and win the first one ever.”

Wilkinson scored NOVA’s first try and added the kick to give NOVA a lead it would never relinquish. NOVA’s Tyler Pierce of Oakton scored his team’s second try on a pass from Willatt. Western Suburbs’ Justin Belcher of Loudoun Valley scored and DJ Gutch added the kick to make the score 12-7 by the end of the first half. Willatt and Gutch each split the uprights for field goals in the second half for the final margin.

NOVA finished an undefeated season at 9-0. Western Suburbs, who was an expansion team this season, finished 6-3 after upsetting the Springfield Youth Club West End in the semifinals. Western Suburbs previously lost to NOVA, 18-7, in their regular season meeting.

NOVA’s players were from Chantilly, Oakton, Robinson, Westfield, Herndon, Stonebridge, Potomac Falls, Centreville and Paul VI. NOVA’s coach, Mike Murphy, teaches at Chantilly.

“It’s one of the most amazing things we’ve done,” said NOVA’s Philip Wilkinson, who was named the game’s most valuable player. “The whole team brought it together. From February we played our hearts out, practiced forever just trying to get ready for this one moment.”

But more important than the play on the field was the game’s significance.

“Most heart, hardest playing, biggest tackles, best effort in the biggest stage for us in high school rugby, so yeah, it’s the best game,” Murphy said. “For the sport of rugby, it’s been amazing.”

NOVA is used to practicing on the turf at Old Redskins Park and playing games on recreational park soccer fields, not in stadiums. They are accustomed to an underground that few people understand or even wish to understand.

But under the guidance of Rugby Virginia, the sport is trying to go mainstream. Rugby Virginia is an eight-team league that was created by taking teams from the Potomac Rugby Union’s summer youth leagues. It has one team comprising of only players from one high school – T.C. Williams – but is looking to start more.

The first step towards getting rugby recognized by the Virginia High School Leagues was to form an unofficial state championship. Previously, Virginia teams would compete against teams from Maryland and the District for a title. But Virginia Union started Saturday’s Virginia state championship as a way to centralize the sport and make it easier to understand and sell to other Virginia high school athletic directors.

“It’s easier to understand for everybody, for the layman who doesn’t know anything about rugby but knows a little bit about high school competition,” Virginia Rugby Executive Director Frederick Bardot said. “It’s a long process but there are more and more kids playing rugby so we hope to get there at some point.”

In its current form, Virginia Rugby is mostly a group of athletes put together from other sports. There are some football players who are trying to stay in shape for the fall season and have more excuses to slam into their opposition. There are players who were cut from other spring sports teams.

But there wasn’t a player on Saturday, despite the heat index that rose above 100 degrees, that regretting making the jump to another – even if foreign – sport.

“We’re trying to spread the word. If you’ve never played rugby before it’s a great sport. Come out and give it a try. You’ll love it, I guarantee it. … I played football, but it’s way better. You don’t have the pads. It’s really a brotherhood. You love your teammates.”
