Gymnastics: Concorde District Championships

By Angela Watts
DigitalSports.com

(Look below the story for dozens of video highlights from Thursday’s meet.)

It looked for much of Thursday night’s Concorde District gymnastics championships at Centreville High that everyone in the room had a split-personality.

Herndon coach Keith Naquin, whose wife, Maureen, is Chantilly’s head coach, wore a Charger purple long-sleeve turtle neck under his Hornet red T-shirt.

And then there was a top W.T. Woodson assistant coach, whose team competed at the Liberty District meet earlier in the week, assisting two different teams Thursday night, wearing a long-sleeve Oakton T-Shirt over top of a short-sleeve Fairfax one. She shed her top layer depending on which team was on an event.

Even meet favorites Chantilly and Herndon, who train together during the regular-season, got in on the action. When they arrived at Centreville for warm-ups there was a large sign strung across the back of the gym to welcome each of the league’s seven gymnastics teams. But the Charger and Hornet gymnasts did a little re-arranging, combining their two signs into one that read, simply, “HERNTILLY.”

And when Crank That by Soulja Boy came blazing over the speakers while all seven teams were cleaning up in preparation for the post-meet awards ceremony, nearly every gymnast in the place was instantly converted into a hip-hop dancer. A few minutes later — when the equipment was all put away — it came as no surprise when a quick version of Cotten-Eyed Joe turned them all into country line dancers instead.

It seemed the only person whose identity never wavered Thursday was Herndon sophomore sensation Maria Hayden, who earned a first-place medal on each of the four event apparatus en route to a convincing win in the all-around competition. The only individual to share any of those honors was Chantilly junior Elly Taura, who tied Hayden on the vault.

“It’s a really good feeling,” said Hayden, who repeated as the bars, floor and all-around champion but won her first titles on the beam and vault. “I was really happy because last meet was not my best meet, and so it’s really good to come back strong from that.”

Hayden’s solid performance — and quality scores by the Hornets’ Alana Henderson and Lauren Sullivan — also helped lead Herndon to its second consecutive team crown. And considering both the history of the district meet and the fact that Hayden is an underclassman, it seems reasonable to go ahead and pencil the Hornets in as the favorite for next season as well.

Since 1998, every winner of the Concorde District meet has successfully completed a three-peat before relinquishing the title. Chantilly started the trend with a three year sweep from 1998-2000, Centreville took over the reigns from 2001-03 and Oakton took its turn from 2004-06.

“This was a really big team effort for us,” Hayden said. “We were all cheering each other on because we wanted this so bad. We wanted to repeat our championship from last year.”

Boys’ Basketball: No. 2 Chantilly 65, No. 3 Westfield 52

By Angela Watts
Content Editor

(Look below the story to find dozens of video highlights
from Friday’s game.)

Friday’s boys’ basketball showdown between No. 2 Chantilly and No. 3 Westfield — both of which entered the contest with only one blemish on their respective records — had just about everything fans would expect to see from combative, crosstown rivals.

There were a variety of dazzling highlights — everything from dunks to blocks to displays of good old-fashioned, juke-you-out-of-your-shoes ball-handling. There was a buzzer-beater headed into half time that gave the home team a narrow, three-point lead at the break. There was also an overflow of emotion on the court as evidenced by five technical foul calls, most of which came in the second half.

And there were more than 2,500 fans who packed the Chargers’ home gym, including boisterous student-sections on each side that not only stood and cheered the entire game but also engaged in their own spirited, back-and-forth banter.

In fact, the only thing missing from the game was a dramatic ending.

No. 2 Chantilly (13-1 overall, 4-1 Concorde District) broke open a double-digit lead on No. 3 Westfield (12-2, 3-1) in the final two minutes of the third quarter and eased to a critical, 65-52 district victory.

The Chargers got big offensive numbers from senior guard Robbie Athearn and junior guard Justin May, who poured in 22 and 20 points, respectively. But they also got key rebounds — and blocks — from freshman center John Manning and junior center Andrew Tureaud, fantastic passing from senior forward Austin Decker and a spectacular dribbling display from senior point guard Jake Nolan.

“That’s the special thing about our team,” May said. “We have different players who can play different roles. We had to add depth, and now that’s one of our strengths.”

As for the third-quarter surge?

“We picked up the intensity because we knew they were going to come out chippy and play physical,” May said. “So we had to go back at ’em.”

Separated by only two points with 1 minute, 51 seconds left in the third quarter, May fired a long three-pointer from the left baseline to extend Chantilly’s lead to 42-37. The next two possessions for the Chargers were owned by Athearn, who delivered a beautiful, no-look pass to Decker on fast break and then muscled through two defenders for a layup of his own with :41 left in the quarter.

Suddenly, the Chargers owned a 47-37 lead headed into the final period.

“Tonight, in the second half, they out-manned us,” said Westfield Coach Doug Ewell, whose team was led by senior guard Jamie Richardson’s 18 points. “We didn’t play very well, didn’t take care of the basketball and they did. They did all of the little things. We can get away with not doing the little things in some games, but tonight it came back and smacked us right in the face.

“But all year long we’ve been preparing for February. January is great, don’t get me wrong. It’s a beautiful time. But we need to be the best we can be in February. Tonight, we weren’t the best we can be, so we’ll grow on it and get better.”

An uneventful fourth-quarter was littered with foul — and technical foul — calls and stall tactics by Chantilly. But the Chargers had already given their faithful more than enough highlights to keep them excited through game’s end — and had showed enough versatility to put a smile on longtime Coach Jim Smith’s face.

“We have some kids who are proven basketball players,” Smith said. “Justin May and John [Manning] have been good at every level they’ve played. And then we have some other kids who are very good players, but I think they’re also very hungry. They’re very competitive and they’re very hungry.

“Robbie [Athearn], we talk about it all the time, he was cut from the freshman team and I think still … that’s something he wears out there on the floor every single time. Jake Nolan [a standout lacrosse player] wasn’t even sure he was going to play last year. And Austin [Decker], he’s just a super-competitive kid. That’s his nature. You just plug him in and he goes.”

No. 3 Westfield 12 15 10 15 — 52
No. 2 Chantilly   14 16 17 18 — 65

Westfield — Richardson 7 3-6 18; Kennedy 0 1-4 1; Free 1 0-0 2; Scanlon 1 2-2 4; Cook 3 0-0 6; Keaney 0 4-4 4; Hubbard 3 2-6 8; Gaston 3 2-4 9. Team total 18 14-26 52.
