Woodson Sophomore Shelly Montgomery Scores With :14 Left in Double Overtime to Give the Cavaliers a 2-1 Victory Over Previously Unbeaten Langley; Chantilly, Lake Braddock and Edison Also Capture Its Respective District Tournament Titles

By Angela Watts
Content Editor

As her teammates hooted and hollered and high-fived behind her, W.T. Woodson sophomore midfielder Shelly Montgomery declared the end of Tuesday night’s, 2-1 overtime victory over Langley in the Liberty District tournament championship game the best part of her life.

Then the giddy teenager paused for an instant — just to make sure she got it right.

“The best part of my life, yeah,” Montgomery said again, nodding her head and smiling broadly. “It was so great.”

With less than 30 seconds remaining in the second overtime session at
Madison High, Montgomery picked herself up after a fall and went racing
toward the goal, unaware, she said, of just how few seconds remaining
before the game would have gone to penalty strokes. Her eyes weren’t on
the clock, but on junior forward Mary Beth Barham, who was trying desperately to sneak a shot past Langley senior goal keeper Kelly Germain.

But Germain, who Woodson Coach Becky Preston
called “phenomenal” in the second overtime period, was rejecting one
shot after another off her pads. Her last save of the game was made
when she dove to the ground in the right front corner of the goal and
took a Barham shot off her mid-section.

The move was spectacular — but it also left the back left corner of the goal vulnerable.

W.T. Woodson’s players piled on sophomore Shelly Montgomery in celebration of her championship-winning goal in the closing seconds of double overtime Tuesday night against Langley.

“I
was running down and I saw Mary Beth Barham,” Montgomery said. “And she
just kept on trying to get it in but the goalie just dove right down.
So I just brought it around reverse and flipped it right over her. Oh
my gosh, it was the most amazing feeling in the world.”

The ball hit the back of the goal with just :14 seconds left in the second overtime, and Montgomery and Barham were instantly swarmed and tackled as each Woodson player piled on in celebration.

“When she shot it, it was an amazing shot,” Barham said of Montgomery. “I was just so happy. It feels like being on top of the world. So amazing.”

The win gave the Cavaliers (15-4) their third consecutive Liberty District title, and put the first blemish on the Saxons’ (17-1) record.

“I think it just came down to that they lasted longer than we did,” said Langley Coach Jennifer Robb. “They played the entire second overtime, and we just ran out of juice.”

Woodson struck first in the game when senior defender Sarah Martin fired a shot off a corner with an assist from junior midfielder Becca Geist with 19 minutes, 31 seconds left in the first half. Langley then similarly knotted the score at the 22:25 mark of the second half on a shot by senior forward Katie Knapp off an insert corner pass by senior midfielder Faith Adams.

The Saxons dominated the first overtime period, but failed to capitalize on its numerous offensive chances. The Cavaliers turned it around and controlled the ball for most of the second overtime session, but had also struggled to finish until Barham started the final push down the stretch.

“It had been a back-and-forth game with Langley and I didn’t know which way it was going to go in the end,” said Preston, in her first season leading the Cavaliers. “They kept getting fast breaks down the field and I didn’t know if we’d get anything past their goalie. She was saving everything we shot at her. So just to get it past her … I don’t even know what to say.”

Concorde District Championship
Chantilly 3, Robinson 1

Chantilly defeated Robinson Tuesday night at Westfield High to capture the Concorde District tournament championship. The Chargers upset No. 1 seed Oakton to advance to the finale.

Kaylie Wallace scored in the games’ opening moments to give
Chantilly the lead. The Rams would answer, knotting the game at 1 with
a goal by senior Erin Duffy assisted by captain Taryn Cutrona. Chantilly forward Rachael Payne then scored to give the Chargers back the lead, 2-1, headed into half time.

The Chargers added one more goal midway through the second half for the game’s final margin.

Senior goal keeper Hayley Stewart made a number of outstanding saves leading the way as Chantilly held on for the win.

“I kind of felt like we were overdue,” said elated Charger Coach Ralph Chapman. “We have been close before but we never quite got there.”

Chantilly poses with its Concorde District championship trophy after beating Robinson, 3-1, on Tuesday night.

Westfield Volleyball Sweeps Rival Chantilly

Westfield Volleyball Sweeps Rival Chantilly

Games Were Exceptionally Close, But Bulldogs Pulled It Out Each Time

By Jessica Lloyd
Westfield High Senior

The crosstown rivalry between the Chantilly (8-2) and the Westfield (11-4) ended in a three-game sweep by the Bulldogs, but the teams were clearly well-matched.

Although it lasted on three games, the Chargers kept the Bulldogs on their toes the entire night.

Chantilly came into the match having played only one district game, resulting in a loss to Centreville. Westfield also fell to the Wildcats earlier in the season, giving cause for both teams to be especially eager for the win Tuesday night.

Westfield contained Chantilly in Game 1, maintaining a comfortable lead that led to a 25-18 victory. The second and third games were a much different story as both games were pushed beyond the regular, 25-point ceiling.

But it was the strong serving of Westfield junior Kat Lanigan that made the difference in Game 2 and sealed what proved a 27-25 win for the Bulldogs. Game 3 was similarly decided in the finals plays, drawing the entire crowd on its feet.

Chantilly, which was led by senior libero Vicky Chung, held a 3-4 point lead for the majority of the game but both teams stayed strong, the score bouncing back-and-forth just as much the hits and serves.

It was Westfield who pulled it out in the end with another exciting, 27-25 finish to complete the three-game sweep.

Chantilly Sweeps Visiting Fairfax, 25-18, 25-22, 25-18

Chantilly Sweeps Visiting Fairfax, 25-18, 25-22, 25-18

Chargers Control the Service Game in Victory Over Rebels; Will Battle Crosstown Rival Westfield on Tuesday

By Angela Watts
Content Editor

There was a lot of youth on both sides of the volleyball court Monday night at Chantilly — and a lot of talent, too.

In the end it was Chantilly, which boasts two seniors on its roster, which out-did its counterparts from Fairfax, whose roster consists of only one upperclassman, 25-18, 25-22, 25-18.

“A lot of our girls have been playing together outside of high school
for a long time, so I think it helps even though we’re not as
experienced as a high school team there is still a lot of experience
there,” Chargers’ junior middle hitter Jessica Cooper said.
“And I know as these girls get older and the seven sophomores become
the seven seniors, that’s really going to make a strong team. It’s
really building our program for the future, I think.”

But don’t misunderstand: Chantilly is pretty good right now, too.

For starters, the Chargers (9-3 overall, 1-0 Concorde District) dominated the service game behind the play of senior Vicky Chung and sophomores Andreea Linte and Joanna Powers, and proved equally outstanding in their serve-receive. Chung, the team’s libero, totaled a match-high 26 digs.

Fairfax
(8-4, 2-2) matched Chantilly’s offensive firepower — and perhaps even
brought more of it — but the Rebels could not match the Chargers’
defensive prowess.

“We just didn’t play well,” Fairfax Coach Christine Zanellato said.
“We beat Robinson in five games and Herndon in five … and we expected
to at least take this team to five. But we made most of the mental
mistakes. We have a very strong offensive game, but we didn’t handle
their serves well. And that’s frustrating because we’ve been working on
that. But once we started making mental mistakes we weren’t able to
come back.”

Chantilly was led offensively by middle hitters Cooper and sophomore Allison Williams, who totaled eight and 12 kills, respectively. Sophomore setters Linte (19 assists) and Emily Wright
(12 assists) did a nice job of mixing high sets to the middle with
short, jump sets that are much harder to execute — but also much
harder to defend.

Chantilly junior Jessica Cooper and senior Haley Rauch go up for a block Monday against Fairfax.

“We’ve really been working on things the past couple of weeks to
strengthen our middle, because usually we go straight to our outside
hitters,” said Cooper, who admitted the short, jump sets are still a
work in progress. “We’re definitely still working it in. It takes a lot
of practice to get the timing down. That’s one thing, though, that once
we connect it’s strong. And it’s a force to be reckoned with.”

Fairfax had its own one-two punch with outside hitters Theresa Harvey, a junior, and Marilyn Peizer, a freshman. The hard-swinging underclassmen led the Rebels offensively and defensively, with Harvey totaling 16 kills and nine digs and Peizer finishing with 10 kills and 13 digs.

“We emphasize passing and defense a lot,” Chantilly Coach Charles Ezigbo
said. “Tonight we had to step up our blocking because they had a couple
of really good hitters, so we had to adjust to them. That’s why our
defense was a little sluggish early because our blocking wasn’t up to
the level of the rest of our defense, but we got it straightened out.”

Ezigbo
did so by using a tremendous amount of depth, shuffling every player on
his roster in-and-out of the game in situations that would suit their
strengths.

“We have people who can play all the way around,
but we just seem to be better when we try to balance it out and play
people at their strengths,” Ezigbo said. “Plus, most of our kids are
young, so it’s good to get them experience now.”

That experience, he hopes, will pay off Tuesday night when Chantilly visits its biggest rival, Westfield (11-4, 2-1).

“I
feel nervous and excited, all kind of rolled into one,” Cooper said.
“It’s a heated match. It’s not just another day coming out and playing.
It’s our crosstown rivalry and they’ve been a good team and they are a
good team. But now, I think we can be the better team.”

Fairfax’s goal is less immediate and instead, geared toward the future.

“The thing is, the girls still tend to shut down,” Zanellato said.
“This is the first year that Fairfax volleyball has really competed
well in the Concorde District and so when you go from a traditionally
losing program to a program that can compete, you have to deal with
learning how to win. They’re a great group of kids, but we’re still
learning, as a team, to expect to win every time we walk on the court.”

Senior libero Vicky Chung rattled off eight straight service points in Game 1 to propel the Chargers to a three-game sweep of the Rebels.

Chargers Use Their Strength Up Front to Bully the Rams in the Second Half of Their Homecoming Game

By Phil Murphy
DigitalSports.com

When push came to shove early in the second half, second-ranked Chantilly (6-1 overall, 3-1 Concorde District) used their massive offensive line to control the clock and have their way with eighth-ranked Robinson (4-3, 1-2) en route to a 41-21 Homecoming ??blackout? win in front of thousands of delirious fans.

The Chargers led by a slim, 14-7 margin at half time, but refused to give up possession in the game??s latter stages, with every drive ending in some kind of score except the one that culminated in the final whistle.

Chantilly was 5-of-6 on 3rd-down conversions in the third and fourth
quarters, and also converted once on fourth down when junior running
back Torrian Pace broke free for a 30-yard scoring scamper and
his second rushing touchdown of the night. Pace finished with a
game-high 135 yards on the ground on just 13 carries with two scores,
and added a 15-yard touchdown reception from senior quarterback Austin Decker.

Decker threw for three touchdowns on just 11 attempts, with no interceptions, while running for 66 yards on 12 attempts.

“We came out a little excited the first quarter, but lost some of it in the second quarter,” senior offensive lineman Doug Boyle
said. “In the second quarter, [the offensive line] started to figure
out what their defensive line was doing, so we started to figure out
which plays would work, and we came out in the second half and executed
those plays the best we could.”

Senior Torrian Pace, shown here against Westfield earlier this season, led Chantilly’s ground attack Friday night with 135 yards and two scores.

Known for their versatility in the backfield, the “CPU” running backs of senior Antonio Cross, Pace, and senior Bugsy Urrutia combined for 25 carries, exactly 200 yards rushing and three rushing touchdowns.

Boyle said he appreciates the Chargers?? depth of resources at the position.

“Any single play they can take it all the way,” he said. “We have Torrian and Bugsy, who are so fast if they get to the outside basically you’re just trying to seal people off and they??ll make things happen, and Antonio just running right up the middle. It??s easy having those three. They make [an offensive line??s] job a whole lot easier, so we??re really lucky to have those three.”

Chantilly??s defense came out to make a statement as well. The Chargers forced five fumbles, recovering three, and held flashy Robinson senior running back Peter Ferrara to 67 yards on 22 carries (3.0 yards per attempt) with a long of just eight yards. Fellow senior running back Alex Murray did break a 76-yard scoring run on the Rams?? first touch of the second half, but the vast majority of the lightning strikes belonged to the Chargers.

Virginia AAA State Golf Tournament

Virginia AAA State Golf Tournament

Oakton Senior Danny Kim Wins the Group AAA Individual Title; Chantilly Takes Second in the Team Competition

By Jimmy Thomas
DigitalSports.com

Oakton senior Danny Kim was one stroke off the lead entering the second
round of the Virginia AAA State Golf tournament at Dominion Valley in
Haymarket. Jason Chun of Frank  W. Cox  High School in Richmond shot a
4-under-par 68 to hold the lead over Kim and All-Met Jake An of
Chantilly who finished day one with a 71.

An won both the Concorde District and Northern Region titles this year.

With
Oakton not competing in the team competition Kim’s tee time was quite a
bit earlier than his competitors. He posted a 70 on Day 2 — the final
day of competition — then grabbed a bite to eat and waited for his
competitors to trickle in.

“I was nervous the whole time,” Kim
said. “I knew there were a lot of good people that just made the turn
that could shoot low numbers.”

But his time proved well worth the wait. Kim’s two-day total of 139 was enough to hold off Nick Austin’s (James River) 140 and An’s 142 to give him the Group AAA individual state title.

The
team competition prove equally exciting as Westfield entered Day 2 only
one stroke behind Cox in the team competition, combining their top four
scores for a 298. Chantilly trailed by six, posting a 303 coming off of
winning the Northern Region Championship last week at Fairfax National
in Centreville.

Oakton senior Danny Kim, who captured the Virginia Group AAA individual golf championship, is congratulated by Chantilly Director of Athletics Terry Brown.

With a pair of 72’s from Ji Soo Park and Victor Monte the Chargers were able to close the gap and finish in second place (599). Westfield used steady team play from Tim Ritter, Brian Keith, Jack Debell and Chris Vigotsky to place third (600). Cox held on to win the team championship with a 594.

Other individual standouts include: Brigitte Baker (Langley) 75-75-150; Lauren Greenlief (Oakton) 74-77-151; Josh Apple (Stone Bridge) 74-76-150; Brian Jaeger (Langley) 78-76-154 and Kenny Towns (Lake Braddock) 82-86-168.
