*Rankings and records as of April 29

1. St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (18-1) — LW: 1
The Saints have won their last four games by a combined score of 70-17 since their loss to McDonogh. The Saints have scored double-digit goals in 18 games this season.

2. Good Counsel (14-2) — LW: 2
Like St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes, the Falcons have recently fallen to McDonogh, but strong wins against Oakton, St. Johns and Georgetown Visitation keep the Falcons at No. 2.

3. Bishop Ireton (15-2) — LW: 4
The Cardinals are rolling, winning 11 straight by double-digit goals.

4. Chantilly (14-0) — LW: 3
The Chargers remain undefeated with wins over Oakton, Langley and T.C. Williams.

5. Loudoun Valley (7-0) — LW: 5
The Vikings own the Northwest Region, recently beating Osbourn Park and Fauquier by a combined score of 42-1.

6. Madison (10-1) — LW: NR
The Warhawks vault into the No. 6 spot with a strong 16-8 win over Langley. Madison has now won four straight, averaging 19 goals in those games.

7. Bullis (14-3) — LW: 6
The Bulldogs notched three wins last week, but a two-goal overtime win over 1-8 Holton-Arms is worrisome.

8. Leonardtown (9-0) — LW: 7
The Raiders are still undefeated, but victories over winless Northern and Chopticon don’t really impress.

9. Holy Cross (9-3) — LW: 9
The Tartans notched two victories last week.

10. Winston Churchill (10-0) — LW: 10
The Bulldogs remain on of MoCo’s top teams with wins over Sherwood, Bethesda and Springbrook.

D.C. Beltway Area: Girls’ Soccer Top 10

Girls’ Soccer Top 10.
*Rankings and records as of April 27

1. Robinson (8-0-1) — LW: 1
The Rams beat Westfield and Yorktown last week by a combined 7-1, but face only more tests in the final week of the season. Robinson travels to No. 9 Oakton on Tuesday and plays No. 8 Stone Bridge on May 8.
2. Broad Run (9-0-1) — LW: 2
The Spartans have outscored their opponents 37-2 this year, including 15-0 in the last week. Broad Run has five Division I signees and will face Heritage (9-2-1) on Tuesday, Briar Woods (6-3-1) on Wednesday and Loudoun County (5-4-2) on Friday.
3. Loudoun Valley (8-0-0) — LW: 3
The Vikings have torched their first eight opponents, winning by a
combined 36-1 margin and sit comfortably atop the Cedar Run District. Loudoun Valley faces Stonewall Jackson, No. 10 Battlefield and Osbourn on Friday.
4. W.T. Woodson (9-1-1) — LW: 4
The Cavaliers had a trio of 3-0 wins last week, including one on the road against No. 7 McLean on Tuesday. Woodson, though, will be tested in the final week with a pair of non-district games. It hosts No. 6 West Springfield — winners of eight-straight games — on Thursday before hosting No. 9 Oakton on Monday. The combined records of those two opponents: 15-2-1.
5. Chantilly (8-1-1) — LW: 5
The
Chargers
beat the then-No. 7 Cougars, 2-1, on Friday. Chantilly has
outscored its opponents 30-6 this year, but closes with a brutal schedule. It faces No. 8 Stone Bridge at home
on Wednesday, No. 7 McLean on the road on Thursday and Centreville next week.
6. West Springfield (8-1-1) — LW: 8

The
Spartans, who returned seven starters, have won eight consecutive games
after opening the season with a 1-1 draw to No. 8 Stone Bridge and a 1-0
loss to Centreville. During its winning streak, West Springfield has
outscored its opponents 32-0, including an 8-0 win over then-No. 10 South County last week. It faces No. 4 W.T. Woodson on Thursday, which will be covered by DigitalSports.
7. McLean (9-1-0) — LW: 6
The
Highlanders have netted a Northern Region-best 44 goals this season,
while allowing just nine. McLean fell to No. 4 Woodson on Tuesday, 3-0, but rebounded with back-to-back wins over Langley, 2-0 (article and highlights HERE), and Marshall, 5-0. It faces No. 5 Chantilly on Thursday.
8. Stone Bridge (7-2-2) — LW: 9
The
Bulldogs have won six games in a row by a combined 23-3, and all were district wins. Stone Bridge’s
two losses are to No. 2 Broad Run, 2-1, and No. 7 McLean, 2-1. It closes the season with
back-to-back matches against No. 5 Chantilly — to be played this Wednesday — and No. 1 Robinson on May 8.
9. Oakton (7-1-0) — LW: 7
The Cougars have outscored their opponents by a collective 37-5. But last week, Oakton suffered its first loss to No. 5 Chantilly, 2-1, before rebounding to beat Centreville, 5-1. It faces No. 1 Robinson at home tonight.
10. Battlefield (6-2-1) — LW: N/A
The Bobcats beat Culpeper, 8-0, in their only game last week. But a match-up with unbeaten — and untested — No. 3 Loudoun Valley looms huge in Purcellville on Wednesday.

Also Receiving Votes — listed alphabetically
Centreville (5-3-1)
Heritage (9-2-1)
South County (4-2-2) — LW: 10

Girls’ Soccer Top 10.
*Rankings and records as of April 20

1. Robinson (6-0-1) — LW: 1
In the year after they won the Virginia AAA State title, the Rams only fortified their strength of schedule. Robinson has faced No. 4 W.T. Woodson, No. 5 Chantilly, perennial Northern Region power Lake Braddock, perennial Central Region power Deep Run and will play No. 7 Oakton on April 28. After beating the Chargers, 2-0, in impressive fashion on Friday (article and highlights HERE), the Rams face West Potomac, Westfield and Yorktown this week.
2. Broad Run (7-0-1) — LW: 4
The Spartans have outscored their opponents 22-2 this year, including 8-0 in the last week. Broad Run beat Dulles District foes Potomac Falls and Dominion 5-0 and 3-0, respectively.
3. Loudoun Valley (7-0-0) — LW: 5
The Vikings have torched their first seven opponents, winning by a combined 31-1 margin and sit comfortably atop the Cedar Run District.
4. W.T. Woodson (6-1-1) — LW: 2
Weather willing, Woodson plays No. 6 McLean on April 21. Last week, after opening with a 2-0 road loss to No. 9 Stone Bridge, the Cavaliers rebounded with a 5-3 win over Langley.
5. Chantilly (6-1-1) — LW: 3
The
Chargers beat Fairfax, 3-0, early last week before falling to No. 1 Robinson, 2-0, on the road on Friday. Even with that defeat, Chantilly has outscored its opponents 25-4 this year. It faces No. 7 Oakton at home on Friday.
6. McLean (7-0-0) — LW: 6
The
Highlanders have netted a Northern Region-best 37 goals this season,
while allowing just six, but a 15-0 season-opening win at Wakefield
skews that statistic. McLean faces No. 4 Woodson and Langley this week, weather willing.
7. Oakton (6-0-0) — LW: 7
No
team has gotten within three goals of the Cougars this season as they
have outscored their opponents by a collective 31-2. In a four-day span beginning on April 24, Oakton plays No. 5 Chantilly, Centreville and No. 1 Robinson.
8. West Springfield (6-1-1) — LW: 9
The
Spartans, who returned seven starters, have won six consecutive games
after opening the season with a 1-1 draw to No. 9 Stone Bridge and a 1-0
loss to Centreville. During its winning streak, West Springfield has
outscored its opponents 21-0.
9. Stone Bridge (4-2-2) — LW: N/A
The Bulldogs have won three games in a row by a combined 13-0, including a 2-0 home win over then-No. 2 W.T. Woodson on Tuesday. Stone Bridge’s two losses are to No. 2 Broad Run, 2-1, and No. 6 McLean, 2-1. It faces South Lakes and Madison this week, but closes the season with back-to-back matches against No. 5 Chantilly and No. 1 Robinson.
10. South County (3-1-2) — LW: N/A
Since a disappointing 4-1 loss to Centreville, the Stallions are 3-0-2, with their three wins coming by a combined 21-0 margin. South County also tied No. 5 Chantilly, 1-1, on March 24. It faces No. 8 West Springfield at home on Wednesday night.

Girls’ Lacrosse: No. 3 Chantilly 18, Westfield 17

Tied at 17 with rival Westfield inside of two minutes, Chantilly sent its offense to the E.R.

Charger senior midfielder Erin Robertson scored the game-winning goal with :30 seconds left — her first of the match — as No. 3 Chantilly survived, 18-17, in a 50-minute home test with Westfield on Thursday night.

“We were trying to use the clock, so we wanted to possess the ball,” Charger coach Michele Gates said of the moments leading up to Robertson’s goal. “We were trying to go big and Westfield was going hot, which is basically doubling the ball.

“We just kept moving it around on offense and were able to come up with the goal.”

Added Robertson: “I honestly didn’t even know how much time was left. I got the ball and we were focusing on keeping because we were tied. I didn’t want to give anything up. I just saw the open net and went for it.

“I wanted to make up for the goal I missed earlier.”

Fortunately for the purple and white, Chantilly senior Brittany Griel was covering for a multitude of missed chances.

Griel, committed to Delaware, scored a game-high seven goals and piled on four assists to account for nearly two-thirds of the Charger scores.

“To be honest, I think it was just adrenaline,” said Griel, who scored 94 times and recorded 67 assists last year. “I wasn’t very happy with my game and I wanted to help my teammates out and prove to them that I was going to step it up.

“Really, everything I do is based off my teammates, like the cuts. Every time it’s a one-on-one, it’s usually because of our cuts.”

Added Gates, whose team lost to Oakton in both the Northern Region and Virginia AAA State championship finals in 2008: “She’s a very powerful offensive player. She moves the goalie. She knows what she’s going to do and pretty much no one else does.

“We’re lucky to have her.”

It was the Bulldogs, however, that found first-half fortune on Thursday, jumping out to an early advantage.

Senior midfielder Amanda O’Sullivan, committed to Colgate, scored four of her five goals — and junior attack Katie Sasek all three of hers — in the first half, as Westfield led, 12-10, at the intermission.

The Chargers, though, slowed their offensive build-up and honed their late-game focus, outscoring the Bulldogs, 8-5, over the final 25 minutes. Senior middie Katie Stillwell, committed to William & Mary, scored three of her four goals after halftime.

“I think Westfield is a very fast and talented team and they were out here to prove that,” said Gates, in her fifth season. “We needed to just settle down and focus on what we needed to do. We know how to play lacrosse.

“We needed to concentrate on doing that and not get so flustered by the scoreboard.”

Girls’ Soccer: No. 1 Robinson 2, No. 3 Chantilly 0

After its Virginia AAA State championship last season, the Rams returned nine starters to this year’s club.

But after the graduation of Katherine Yount, now at William & Mary, Robinson had to replace the most critical position in soccer, if not in all sports: Goalkeeper.

So far, though, the transition has been seamless. And, to the dismay of teams around the region and state, Yount’s successor is only getting more comfortable between the pipes.

Sophomore Charlotte Owens anchored a well-organized defensive effort as No. 1 Robinson reasserted its position atop the area against No. 3 Chantilly, 2-0, on Friday night.

The Chargers entered the match as the third-highest scoring team in the Northern Region — with 25 goals — before they were held scoreless for the first time this year.

“It’s really hard to take Katherine’s place,” said Owens after her fourth clean sheet through seven games. “But I’m doing the best I can. There are a lot of responsibilities I have to fill. I’m trying to get shutouts [in] as many games as I can. It’s hard, but I just have to keep working at it. As you can see tonight, I’m starting to get it down.

“With all the seniors and the coaching staff, I’ve grown so much as a player and I can’t ask for much more.”

Beyond the experience around her, Owens has gotten more-than-ample offensive backing from an experienced front line.

Robinson, which has allowed only four goals this year, has scored 19, despite playing a brutal out-of-district schedule, including games with nationally-ranked W.T. Woodson and Deep Run.

And it jumped on the board early on Thursday.

In the 16th minute, Ram senior Jensen Smith played an in-swinging corner kick to the top of the six-yard box, where senior Annie Hovland was streaking in for an empathic header.

For Hovland, who plays for the BRYC Blue Thunder club team, it was her sixth goal of the season, a team-high.

“I run back post, usually, for corner kicks,” said Hovland, a defender on the Blue Thunder, but a midfielder for Robinson. “It was kind of hard in this game because a lot of their players would mob, so I kind of had to push through. The header was just great because you can’t really see and then — woo! — you scored.

“It was really nice to get us on the board.”

An own goal in the 35th minute added an insurance score for the Rams, which proved inconsequential.

The battle of the night was in the middle third of the field, which was littered with future Division I talent.

Chantilly central midfielders Cortlyn Bristol (William & Mary) and Katie Menzie (James Madison) battled tirelessly with Robinson freshman Barbara Platenburg, an Olympic Developmental Program player, and junior Brooke Curtis.

Despite Curtis being limited by an illness, the Ram duo had the slight edge and effectively kept possession in the attacking third, hindering any chance of a Charger comeback.

“I think Barbara and Brooke, our center mids, do a great job on defense,” Hovland said. “Brooke wins a lot of the punts and stuff. She has mono right now, but she still played great.

“I think the two of them together did a really good job of controlling the middle.”
