Gymnastics: 2009 VHSL State Individual Championships

As Osbourn Park’s team huddled together on the floor awaiting the results from this weekend’s Virginia State Gymnastics Team Championships, there were a few moments on immense anxiety.

And, Coach Monica Brown said, impatience, too.

The Yellow Jackets, the two-time defending champions, thought they had narrowly edged Eastern Region power Kellam for their third straight title.

But the Knights’ coach had petitioned the judges to have the scores from the uneven parallel bars re-evaluated.

And Brown knew that if an error had been found, it could have meant the difference between first and second place.

“We knew we probably had them by a tenth of a point, but when they made that inquiry we didn’t know if that could change things,” she said. “So we really weren’t sure until they finally announced it.”

An in that instant, the anxiety turned to bliss. Osbourn Park did edge Kellam, 150.900-150.800, to become the first Prince William team to ever earn a three-peat.

The runner-up, each time, has been Kellam.

“The girls were so excited,” Brown said. “There were some tears of joy, and some sighs of relief, too. It was hard to wait through it all.

“But Kellam, really they are champions along with us. You can’t have a meet be that close and not feel that way.”

There was less drama — but equal excitement — surrounding the individual competition the next day, where Osbourn Park junior Megan McDonald took second in the All-Around competition behind Kellam’s Kirsten Strausbaugh, who also won the title in 2008.

McDonald did so by placing second on both vault (9.850) and bars (9.850), fourth on floor (9.625) and seventh on beam (9.650).

“It means a lot,” she said. “I didn’t even think I’d be a contender the past two years, but this year I thought I could actually do well, and second place is a big thing to me.”

Boys’ Basketball: No. 5 Chantilly 67, Westfield 46

As Chantilly coach Jim Smith eased down the ladder at the south end of Robinson’s gym, he slipped the freshly-cut basketball net around his neck.

More than 20 minutes later, as locker-room interviews commenced with his staff and players already aboard the team bus, Smith’s nylon necklace remained in place.

Given the 10-year gap between Concorde District titles, all would forgive the 18-year Charger coach if he were still wearing it now.

No. 5 Chantilly controlled the game from tip to finish, mechanically beating bitter rival Westfield, 67-46, in the district championship game on Friday night.

“As soon as we walked in the gym, the [first] game was already over,” said Smith, whose team lost to Westfield, 68-56, in last year’s final. “I thought it was good for our kids, I told them to sit there and watch Oakton cut down the nets, maybe plant the seed a little bit.

“These kids were ready to go tonight. We talked about we hadn’t won in 10 years and they wanted to be the team.”

Added sophomore center John Manning, the Concorde District Defensive Player of the Year: “It feels really good to bring this back to Chantilly after so long.”

The Chargers wasted no time obtaining breathing room.

Chantilly scored on its first four possessions and forced Westfield turnovers on two of its first three.

The Charger surge was captained by sophomore guard Devin Ballam, who hit three 3-pointers and a lay-up in the first 3 minutes, 26 seconds.

Those 11 points were all he would score on the night, but they gave Chantilly an immediate 15-4 advantage.

“I felt it before the game, actually,” said Ballam, whose total was his season-high. “I felt pretty good. I came out and shot the ball pretty well. They left me open most of the time because they were doubling down on John.”

Added Smith of one of his three sophomore starters: “Devin is our point guard. He knows we have a 6’11” center, we’ve got shooters and scorers. He defers and gets the ball to those guys. But they just left him tonight.

“He’s a kid that lives in the gym and he’s very capable of scoring, but that hadn’t been his role.”

The early point padding, though, was a luxury that came to the Chargers for the second-straight night.

In the district semifinal against Centreville on Thursday, junior guard Adam Fridy — the Tournament MVP — scored 11 of his team-high 23 points in the first 1:57 of play as part of a 25-point first quarter for Chantilly.

The Chargers won that game, 82-61.

“It’s a funny thing,” said Smith, whose team’s only loss came to Landon in the final of the Pohanka Chantilly Basketball Tournament. “At the beginning of the year — the first 9 or 10 games — we were really a great first-quarter team. Your season kind of goes through phases. Then, for a while, we were having terrible first quarters.

“And the last couple weeks, we’ve come out and shot the ball well early and got off to great starts. Last night, it was 11-2 out of the shoot and tonight it was 15-4. That was huge. I think we really set tone right from the beginning.”

But for the Chargers to continue their impressive season, they will need to overcome the obstacle that ended it last year: the opening round of the Northern Region Tournament.

Granted, this Chantilly team has a better record, scores more points and allows fewer than it did last season.

And if Smith desires another reminder of his current team’s supremacy over the one of a year ago, he only needs to look around his neck.

“I’ll think about that Sunday. We’ll enjoy this one tonight,” he said of his opening-round game against Yorktown. “Those are all good basketball teams and you have to play good basketball this time of year. We learned that last year.

“We played a good Annandale team at our place in the first round and they knocked us off. Hopefully, we learned something from that.”

Boys’ Basketball: No. 5 Chantilly 82, Centreville 61

With a potential marquee district final looming on Friday, the Chargers looked to Fridy on Thursday.

Junior forward Adam Fridy scored 11 points in the first 1 minute, 58 seconds — en route to a team-high 23 points — in No. 5 Chantilly’s dominant, 82-61 win over Centreville in the Concorde District semifinals at Robinson.

“They were in their 3-2 zone, leaving me in the corner,” said Fridy, who also scored eight points in the first two minutes of the second half. “We got the ball around, got the ball inside to John [Manning] and got their defense on their heels, then getting the ball to Justin [May] and to me in the corner and hitting the shots.

“We knew they were going to play a little bit of zone and we were working on it in practice. We knew ahead of time that they were going to get us wide-open shots. We just executed it.”

Added Charger coach Jim Smith on Fridy’s five 3-pointers: “He’ll do that. They came out and tried to zone us a little bit. And he found an opening in the zone. And when he gets hot, man, he doesn’t miss very often. He can hit five threes in a quarter.”

And, as if that were not enough, when the Wildcats finally had first-half momentum swaying their way, it was ripped back by one of the Charger stellar sophomores.

Centreville — already on a 9-4 run — cut the Chantilly lead to 10 points with less than 10 seconds left in the second quarter and was looking for the final score of the half.

But, after a sneaky defensive assignment change by Charger sophomore Kethan Savage away from Wildcat standout junior Warren Denny, Savage crept towards half-court.

He intercepted Denny’s pass, tipping it over another Centreville guard’s head, collected the ball and laid it off the glass as the buzzer rang.

Instead of cutting the lead to single digits, the Wildcats trailed by 12 points.

“He was all over the place today, getting deflections, getting steals, getting to the rim, getting rebounds,” said Smith of Savage. “That was a big play and he has the potential to be one of the best defensive players we have … They threw the ball over to the wing and Kethan kind of cheated off. I think he tipped it twice.

“Most kids would be trying to get to the ball, he’s actually athletic enough to control it, get to the rim and get a shot.”

Added Savage, who finished with 17 points: “When Warren threw the ball away, I didn’t really see the clock at all. I knew it was winding down, but I didn’t get to see it. I just wanted to sprint, get the ball and lay it up before the buzzer went off.”

The Wildcats not only had to overcome a 12-point deficit, but their uphill comeback battle was steepened by the Charger mountain in the paint.

At 6-feet, 10-inches, sophomore Manning had a handful of blocked shots and forced an immeasurable number of Centreville shot adjustments.

Manning, the Concorde District Player of the Year, is a safety net and defensive luxury that few teams can counter.

“The defensive player of the year, it’s real nice having him in the paint,” Savage said. “We get to take more risks and it helps us to deny. So if we do get beat, he can always help us out down low.”

Added Smith, who won his 351st career game on Thursday: “John shuts things down inside. He makes it hard for people to score inside. That’s the whole basis of our defense.

“I thought John was really good tonight on defense. Even when he was struggling a little bit scoring in the first half, he’s still getting blocks and rebounds for us.”

A six-goal offensive barrage in the third period helped the South-Central All Stars outlast the North-West All Stars, 7-5, at the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League All Star game on Wednesday night at the Ashburn Ice House in a showcase of the top talent from around Northern Virginia. Woodbridge’s Seve Cordova was named the most valuable player for South-Central, scoring two of his squad’s six goals in the final period.

The South-Central All-Stars faced a 3-0 deficit after the first period and were down 4-1 at the end of the second. It was in that second period, however, that South-Central coach Jim Fullem saw the complexion of the game start to change.

“You could kind of see the momentum shift,” he said. “We just kept the pressure on them. I think that we surprised them a little bit. Once you start getting the puck to the net, they are going to start going in.”

All four of South-Central’s lines scored in the third, with Bishop O’Connell’s Nicholas Guerere, Battlefield/Brentsville’s Casey Dunn, Paul VI’s Adam Kosna and Forest Park’s Alex Clark all adding to Cordova’s two goals.

“You **** to keep giving cliches, but it was just absolute total team effort,” said Fullem, who coaches Forest Park. “Everybody chipped in. It was really nice to see. That’s what these things are all about.”

Langley’s Brett Hatfield was named the MVP of the North-West team, allowing only one goal in the second period with 14 saves.

The NVSHL playoffs begin on Friday, with No. 12 Broad Run taking on No. 5 Chantilly, No. 9 Briar Woods going against No. 8 Madison, No. 10 Westfield playing No. 7 Langley and No. 11 Paul VI taking on No. 6 Woodbridge. Top-ranked Stone Bridge, No. 2 Herndon, No. 3 Forest Park and No. 4 Bishop O’Connell all have byes in the first round.

Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball: Concorde District Quarterfinals

By Angela Watts
Assistant GM, Washington D.C. Metro Area

** Click the links above to access a full photo gallery and dozens of video highlights from both games!

Chantilly’s girls and Centreville’s boys had a little extra incentive headed into Tuesday’s Concorde District quarterfinal doubleheader at Centreville.

Both the Chargers and Wildcats had suffered double-digit losses to their quarterfinal round opponent in the final week of January. And that left both squads with a bit of a chip on their shoulder.

And it showed — in a good way.

Chantilly’s girls, seeded fifth, began to pull away by the end if the first quarter and never relinquished its lead in what proved a 44-38 victory over fourth-seeded Centreville.

The Wildcats’ boys, seeded fourth, then led from start to finish in the second half of the doubleheader, easing to a 59-48 victory.

“They got us pretty good over there when we played them a couple of weeks ago, and our guys remembered that and they were fired up, focused and ready to go,” Centreville Coach Drew Murphy said. “And it’s a big step for our program. There have been some lean years around here. We haven’t made the regional tournament in I don’t know how long — it’s been a while — so it means a lot.

“We have a lot of young guys and only have two seniors, so for them to get some experience in this bodes well for our future. And it’s great for our seniors. It’s fun … and a great thing for the program.”

Indeed with the victory not only do the Charger girls (12-10 overall) and Wildcat boys (10-12) advance to the Concorde District semifinals but also earn an automatic berth into next week’s Northern Region tournament.

“Coming in here I’ve been very emotional the past couple of weeks because I just want my kids to finish the season well,” said first-year Chantilly Coach Valerie Allen. “For me, it was like my Senior Nigh in high school or college. I was like, ‘I’m not ready for this to be over. So guys, let’s win tonight and let’s get into tomorrow and buy ourselves another week together.’

“So I am just super excited that I get at least one more week with my kids because I just love coaching them … and they deserve this.”

The Charger girls, led by senior guard Lisa Comerford’s game-high 14 points, advanced by playing a painstaking — but effective — zone defense that limited the Wildcats ability to get the ball into the high post.

“We’ve run a lot of stuff against them, and we’ve tried our trap zone,” Allen said. “But they’re a very good basketball team and they’re hard to match up. So we knew we had to do something different.

“So we sat back in a 1-2-2 zone and we made the game a little **** … but we wanted to. The whole idea was to keep the ball out of the high post because if they get it in there somebody’s making a shot.

“Kudos to my girls. We’ve been talking a lot about being a company and how the job on the bench is equally important as the job on the floor and if you’re not doing your job the company’s not going to be successful. But tonight every single girl stepped up and did their job with a purpose. They came together.

“It’s like I’m a proud mom!”

Centreville’s boys came together as well, putting on a pin-point display of passing while leaving the heavy lifting to junior swingman Warren Denny (game-high 24 points) and
senior guard Kareem Worthey (22). The duo was sensational in the victory,
combining for all but 13 of the team’s total points.

“Boy, what is there to say?” Murphy said, smiling. “I mean, when Warren plays like that … good grief. I don’t know who’s better. I’m sure there’s a guy out there who is … but I’d like to see who it is. And Kareem has been hitting jump shots for us all year, but I don’t think he hit a jumper all night. He scored in the paint and in transition.

“So those guys, boy, they carried us. And it’s just fun to watch them when they’re doing that because both of them work so hard in practice. It’s nice to see it pay off.”
