Playoff Baseball and Softball: Concorde District Championship

CONCORDE DISTRICT BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Earlier this month, Chantilly Coach Kevin Ford used the pitching combination of junior Jordan Johnson and senior Christopher Yates to win on the road at league-favorite Oakton. And why mess with a winning formula?

So Ford called on the same combination Monday night, and Johnson and Yates surrendered only two hits to help the Chargers defeat Oakton, 5-3, to earn their first district baseball championship since 1991.

“Jordan does an outstanding job,” Ford said. “He is a kid that just goes out and battles. He keeps throwing strikes, keeps hitting his spots. He is just fearless.”

The game was scoreless through the first four innings until the Chargers posted three runs in the top of the fifth. Yates led off with a single and later scored on an error. Then junior Daniel Bates knocked in senior Justin Carwile with a double to right/center and later scored himself on a sacrifice fly by senior Daniel Phillips

The Cougars answered quickly in the bottom half of the inning when senior catcher Keith Werman doubled in two runners to  knotting the game at 3-3. But Chantilly would not be denied and just like the aforementioned game earlier this year junior first baseman Brian King blasted a two-run home run in the top of the sixth to give the Chargers a two-run lead and, ultimately, the victory.

CONCORDE DISTRICT SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Robinson, the defending Northern Region champion, will enter this year’s upcoming tournament as the No. 1 seed after beating Herndon, 4-2, on Monday night at Westfield 4-2 en route to capturing the Concorde District championship.

The Rams got seven strong innings in the pitching circle from tournament MVP Erin Henning, who allowed only one earned run while scattering eight hits. Robinson sophomore Marcy Bowden led the way offensively, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and one run scored.

Hornet senior pitcher Katie Briggs went 3-for-4 from the plate and got her team started with a monster solo home run over the center field wall in the top of the first inning, but Herndon, despite eight hits, failed to capitalize. The Hornets stranded seven base runners in the game.

Both teams, however, will move on the Northern Region tournament and host a first-round game.

Girls’ Playoff Lacrosse: Chantilly 18, Stone Bridge 4

By Jimmy Thomas

Check below the story for complete video highlights from Thursdays game

Seven different players netted goals for Chantilly Thursday night in an 18-4 rout over Stone Bridge in the quarterfinal round of the Northern Region tournament.

The Chargers wasted little time as junior Kaitlyn Stillwell scored just over three minutes into the game. A minute later it was junior Brittany Griel and a minute after that sophomore Elizabeth Dunwoody got in on the action as Chantilly’s lead began to mount.

This, it turns out, was a familiar trend as that trio scored scored a combined 13 goals on the night. Dunwoody led the way with six goals while Griel added four and Stillwell netted three.

“Everybody played really well,” Dunwoody said after the game. “It wasn’t just an idividual player taking it to the goal. Everybody contributed. It was great.”

Stone Bridge, meanwhile, got two goals from senior Meghan DeMartino to make the score 4-2 with just under 15 minutes remaining in the first half, but Chantilly would answer ripping off eight unanswered goals.

Junior Jessica Dennis scored back to back goals during that span giving her three on the night.

With a 12-2 lead in the second half the Chargers slowed the game and worked the clock with each possession until it had all zeros.

The Bulldogs finished their season with a 13-2 record and a Liberty District championship banner to hang in the gymnasium.

The Chargers, meanwhile, move on to the Northern Region semifinals and will face the winner of Madison/Westfield on Monday at Lake Braddock.

Lacrosse Playoffs: Robinson Girls and Chantilly Boys Win Concorde Titles

By Jimmy Thomas
Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

Check below the story for highlights from both games in separate video players. Highlights from the boys game will be just below highlights from the girls game. Enjoy

The Concorde District girls’ and boys’ lacrosse championship games were moved from Robinson High to Fairfax High Friday night because the Rebels’ turf field was one of the few in the area that could sustain Thursday night’s downpour. Chantilly, the top seed in both games, entered the title matches with a combined record of 25-0 record on the year.

Chantilly’s girls were up first in a match-up with No. 2 seed Robinson, which they defeated earlier this season in overtime. Friday’s game featured six ties and was tied at 13 with less than a second left in regulation. Yes, a second.

That’s before Robinson junior Megan Dunleavy fired a shot that sneaked low past Chantilly’s goal keeper for her sixth goal, enough to give the Rams a 14-13 win at the buzzer and the Concorde District tournament championship .

“They are such a fast team — such a powerful team — we needed to make sure we had possession at the end,” Rams’ Coach Allison Nuen said.

Robinson, which defeated Westfield, 15-5, to reach the finale,  got a hat-trick from junior Sarah Moody and two goals from sophomore sister Rachel Moody in the victory.

Chantilly, despite getting four goals from junior Brittany Griel and three each from senior Christina Patten and junior Kaitlyn Stillwell, were unable to take the lead at any time other than the games’ opening moments. Trailing 10-7 at half time, the Chargers tied the game at 11 and 13 but could not net the go-ahead score.

Robinson “pulled the game out in the last couple of seconds and we weren’t able to do that on our end,” Chantilly Coach Michele Gates said. “Robinson has excellent competitors. They always come out to win. This game was decided by one point, the last game was two points. We are always neck-and-neck. They just got this one in the win column.”

Chantilly’s boys team, which watched the final moments of the girls’ game sitting in the stands in full-gear, were determined not to fall to a similar fate. And they most certainly did not. The Chargers combined an early lead with great goal-tending to pull out a 9-7 victory over Oakton and keep their undefeated season in tact.

In the process, Chantilly claimed its first Concorde District tournament championship in school history.

Chantilly got a first quarter hat-trick from senior Kevin O’Neill to take an early,  5-0 lead. That five-goal deficit proved to be enough as the Chargers took a 5-1 lead into half time and stretched that margin to 9-3 lead after three quarters. O’Neill netted another goal in the third to give him four for the game, while senior Corey Aferiat scored two of his own.

“The guys were very focused, very loose and they came to play tonight,” Chantilly Coach Kevin Broderick said. “We have 16 seniors and they didn’t need a pep talk. It’s a team
game, they buy into it and they lead by example They are coaches on the sideline. They are
coaches on the field. They do a nice job.”

Oakton made a late run, scoring four fourth-quarter goals to pull with in two, but it proved too little too late. Senior Rob Koster scored twice for the Cougars and James McClellan and Nick Stevens both scored in the games’ final minute.

All four teams will play at home on Thursday in the opening of the Northern Region tournament.

Varsity Baseball: No. 9 Westfield 8, No. 3 Chantilly 7

By Phil Murphy
Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

**Check below the story for video highlights. Re-live the entire contest in 15 min, 30 sec. Post-game interviews added.**

The scenario could not have been better scripted: Chantilly ace Patrick Somers had Westfield first baseman and slugger Matt Snyder down to his final strike, and the Chargers were holding a one-run lead at home on Senior Night with two runners on base.

The ending could not have been more Disney — at least for the Bulldog supporters amongst the standing-room-only crowd.

Snyder, who has committed to play at Ole Miss next season, roped a double to the left/center field wall off of the East Carolina-bound Somers, plating the game-tying and game-winning runs as Westfield prevailed over Chantilly, 8-7.

“Pat [Somers] is a great pitcher, lefty versus lefty,” said southpaw Snyder, who also blasted a solo home run over the parking lot beyond the right field fence in the third inning off of Chantilly starting pitcher Chris Yates. “I told Kevin [Reardon], ‘Just get on, man.’ He’s been doing it the whole season. The pitch before that was the exact same pitch, I think, fastball away. I got a good swing on it and fouled it back. I was looking for the same pitch because it had been a routine during like the whole game. I saw it good, I put a good swing on it and saw it lined right over to the fence.

“It was a great feeling. To put the team ahead, top of the seventh inning, in a game this important, it was awesome. It feels a little better than the home run, I have to tell you. It put us in the lead. The home run got us closer to the lead, but the double got us the lead.”

After Snyder’s late heroics, the Chargers threatened to force extra innings — at the least — in the last half of the seventh.

Westfield sophomore Aaron Scoville retired the first two batters he faced in nine pitches. But a double, walk and a passed ball in succession put the game-winning run on second with pinch hitter Brandon Beckner at the plate.

Two pitches after a would-be, game-winning double down the line landed inches foul, Beckner hit a dribbler to sophomore Danny Thorpe at shortstop and was beaten by the throw to first for the game’s final out.

“I was just really pumped to go in there, I’ve always wanted to come into a tight game,” said Scoville, mobbed by his teammates on the field after the win. “I had to stick to my mechanics and throw strikes to try and let the defense do the work.”

In arguably the Northern Region’s strongest district, both teams had noted points of improvement with elimination games looming. There were a combined eight errors on Wednesday – all by infielders – in addition to several mishandled fielding plays that were scored as hits.

“It was a very **** baseball game,” Westfield Coach Chuck Welch said. “Sometimes you have to find ways to win when it’s not a great game. And I would say that was probably one of the uglier games I’ve seen defensively, but a couple of good things come out of that.

“One: [starting pitcher Tommy] Fenyak continues to battle when we’re giving them six outs an inning … and certainly clutch hitting by Matthew. Everybody had a hand in the negativeness, the positiveness, and it was team effort that was not very pretty.”

Added Chantilly Coach Kevin Ford: “Hopefully this is going to spur us on, if we see them again, to get a little fire in our butts to avenge this loss. I would say — a little bit — that we gave it to them. It was just an **** game.

“I mean, have you seen an uglier game?”

Despite the loss, Chantilly will be seeded second in the Concorde District Tournament, which begins May 12. Oakton, which defeated Robinson amidst a blackout, 5-2, on Wednesday, will be the top seed. Westfield is third.

“We learned that anything can happen,” said Welch, whose team has averaged 11.7 runs per game in the last three games after posting 1.8 runs in the previous four. “We were laying in the coffin and they were looking for the hammer to put it in. I guess that’s what it is: You’re never, ever out of it.

“It’s baseball. There are just too many crazy things that can happen.”

Boys’ Lacrosse: Chantilly 6, Westfield 4

By Phil Murphy

**After enjoying the story, check below for game clips. Full video highlights are posted, re-live the game in 13 minutes below.**

In Tuesday’s Concorde District lacrosse tournament semifinal, unbeaten Chantilly held Westfield without a shot for more than a quarter.

Problem was, the Chargers still trailed by a goal the entire time.

But after 19 unanswered shots at Bulldog goalkeeper Ross Lavin – and an unaltered scoreboard – the Chargers broke through on senior Corey Aferiat’s second of four goals to spark a 6-4 home win.

Chantilly (12-0) will face Oakton (8-5) for the Concorde District Championship at 8 p.m. Friday at Robinson.

“This feels unbelievable,” said Aferiat, who has committed to play at Muhlenburg College (Allentown, Pa.) next season. “We have never heard that [we were in the District final], at least since I was a freshman. I don’t know about before that, but we just want to keep pushing it.

“We have great senior leadership, a couple guys – Kevin O’Neill, Ian Mills – our captains, they really push us. And our coaches … they push us to do us best every time and we can’t give anything less.”

The final score on Tuesday was clearly dissimilar to the 13-2 Charger victory from April 17, but the flow of play was quite comparable — Chantilly held a decided 38-9 advantage in shots-on-goal. The difference on Tuesday, however, was the debut of Westfield’s zone defense.

“Defensively, we came out with a different game plan this time, coming out with a zone,” said Bulldog Coach Gary Malm, who has led Westfield to the past two Virginia AAA state title games. “We figured it would mix them up a little bit, make them think a little bit. Not that it didn’t work, our offense never showed up today, all four quarters.

“We held this team to six goals – four goals, really, going into end of the fourth quarter. But I don’t think we had five shots in the second half, partly because they played us well defensively … and we just couldn’t get it going.”

Trailing 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, the Chargers out-shot the Bulldogs, 14-0, in the second period but failed to score. Westfield clogged the goal mouth with well-placed defenders and Lavin, a senior, recorded 12 saves.

“We thought that, if we had to go to overtime, we had patience, we were going to put it together and put it in the back of the net,” said Chantilly Coach Kevin Broderick, whose roster features 16 seniors. “We thought if we play our game, eventually it would come around. There was a lot of talk about us — with the long layoff – whether we’d have our A-game or not today.

“Would we rise up and have the composure with a challenge that was there? We thought that we could do that if we just took our time.”

At the 8:33 mark of the third quarter, the Chantilly finally found a necessary, extra gear. Aferiat received a precise pass from Mills in an offensive set, turned and equalized on a low shot that bounced into the back of the net.

Aferiat would add the go-ahead goal just over five minutes later and the game-clinching transition goal from a string of passes from senior Tyler Ott with 3:06 left in regulation.

“Coach [Bob] Waters and Coach [Kevin] O’Connor pulled me aside before the game and told me to shoot low,” he said. “That’s what I was trying to do: If I did shoot high, to look low. They were like, ‘He’s a really good goalie.’

“I know him from summer leagues and such. I know his tendencies. I did my best to stick it, that’s really all I could hope for. And just hope it goes in.”

Varsity Baseball: Chantilly 6, Oakton 5

By Jimmy Thomas
Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

**Check below the story for complete video highlights from Mondays game**

Chantilly pulled even with Oakton atop of the Concorde District standings Monday night after defeating the host Cougars, 6-5, and spoiling their Senior Night festivities.

Oakton got on the board first by getting three consecutive singles to start the game from seniors Keith Werman, Connor Madden and Kevin Wager. Senior Bret Williams doubled later in the inning to give the Cougars a 2-run lead after one.

After a shaky first inning Charger junior hurler Jordan Johnson was perfect for the next three innings, not allowing a hit while striking out five.

But offensively, Chantilly needed one trip through the batting order to gets their bats going. Then, in the third inning, senior leadoff batter Chris Gentile, in his second at-bat, hit a two-out, solo home run. As he crossed home plate, Gentile yelled “Lets Go! Lets Go!” to his awaiting teammates.

And go is exactly what the Chargers did. Chantilly posted three more runs the following inning when junior Brian King hit a three-run, home run that scored seniors Patrick Moore and Chris Yates, both of whom reached on a base hit.

“He has just recently made a few adjustments and has really started pounding the ball,” Chantilly Coach Kevin Ford said. “He has been working so hard, he has just let it come and let his ability take over. We hope to keep him going in that way.”

King picked up another RBI the following inning on a single as the Chargers took a 6-1 lead into the bottom half of the fifth inning.

That’s when Oakton posted a valiant rally. After a walk and a hit batter, Madden and Wager recorded back-to-back hits to score three and close the gap to 6-5 before Chantilly relief pitcher John Colella entered to end the threat.

Colella pitched a scoreless sixth inning before giving way to Yates, who was also perfect in the seventh to earn the save.

Both teams have one game remaining in district play before the post-season begins. Chantilly will host Westfield on Wednesday while Oakton travels to Robinson. The Concorde District Tournament is set to begin May 12.
