Boys’ Lacrosse: Chantilly 7, Westfield 5

When the first half came to a close Thursday night at Westfield, Chantilly Coach Kevin Broderick gathered his players together toward the far end of the field and asked their opinion on how the first half had gone.

One of his senior leaders spoke up, announcing it was the worst half of lacrosse they’d played all season.

Broderick readily agreed.

And then he helped the Chargers fix it.

By getting back to the basics, Chantilly rallied from a four-goal, half time deficit to defeat rival Westfield, 7-5, and improve to 7-1 overall this season, 5-0 in Concorde District play. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, fell to 3-5 overall and 3-2 in the league.

“I told the players that we needed to go the old-fashioned route by taking it one goal at a time, out-hustling them on the ground balls and playing good defense,” Broderick said. “The stats didn’t show it, but if you watched the first half you could see that they were winning in those areas for sure. I just complimented their coach on that. They came out fired up and played well and with a lot of enthusiasm.

“And our guys, I don’t know if they were taken aback or were a bit nervous … but this was a big night for us, a big rivalry and a big district game.”

Westfield was indeed hot early, jumping to a 5-1 half time lead on the strength of a pair of goals by senior middie Woody Angle and one each by junior middie Austin Fallon, senior middie A.V. Lawless and sophomore attack Ryan O’Sullivan.

Chantilly’s lone first-half goal came with just :13.2 seconds left in the second quarter on an unassisted score by junior attack Kevin Egan that was sandwiched between two Westfield scores. The two teams combined to net three goals in the final :21.2 seconds of the half.

But then came the break — and the huge momentum change.

Chantilly exploded for four, third-quarter goals — two by sophomore attackman Devon Westerman and one each by Egan and junior middie Joey Marson — to knot the score at 5 headed into the final 12 minutes of play. In addition to such aggressive offense, the Chargers buckled down defensively and seemed to beat the Bulldogs to every ground ball. As a result, nearly the entire second half was played in front of Westfield goalie Alex Kawchak, who totaled a game-high nine saves.

But in the fourth quarter the Chargers snuck past two more goals Kawchak — securing hat-tricks for both Egan and Westerman — to seal the hard-fought victory.

“Our defense is very strong, the heart-and-soul of our team,” Broderick said. “And they showed that in the second half. They played a lot better, and a lot of that started with our goalie, Derek Kegerreis. He had a rough first half but he played a great second half. He not only made the saves but he’d clear it going the other way to take the pressure off of us.

“And once we got the ball over midfield, good things happened.”

Chantilly       0  1  4  2 — 7
Westfield      2  3  0  0 — 5

Goals — Chantilly 7 (Eagen 3, Westerman 3, Marson); Westfield 5 (Angle 2, Fallon, Lawless, O’Sullivan). Assists — Chantilly 4 (Fitzgerald, Gallegos, Turpyn, Westerman); Westfield 2 (Angle, Coughlin). Shots — Chantilly 22; Westfield 13. Saves — Chantilly’s Derek Kegerreis 4; Westfield’s Alex Kawchak 9. Ground balls — Chantilly 32; Westfield 23. Faceoffs — Chantilly 6; Westfield 5.

Chantilly senior Justin May — surrounded by his family, coaches, friends and teammates — signed his official letter-of-intent Wednesday to play basketball next season at Delaware State University.

The standout guard who is widely regarded as one of the best in the Northern Region will try to help turn around a Hornet squad that finished 8-24 last season in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

In addition to the Chargers’ coaching staff — head coach Jim Smith and assistant coaches Andrew Duggan, Chris Dux and Kurt Sporkmann — May was also proudly joined by Marvin Elliott, who was instrumental in his summer AAU experiences with the Alexandria Titans.

D.C. Beltway Area: Girls’ Soccer Top 10

Girls’ Soccer Top 10.
*Rankings and records as of April 14, 2 p.m

1. Robinson (5-0-1)
The
Rams were 21-1-0 last season en route to capturing the Virginia AAA
state title and returned nine starters from that team. Robinson has
outscored its opponents 17-4 this season and only has a 2-2 road draw
with No. 2 W.T. Woodson keeping it from perfection. It faces No. 3
Chantilly on Friday.
2. W.T. Woodson (5-0-1)
The Cavaliers only graduated four players from last year’s team that went 12-3-2, but are without Florida State-bound senior Niki Mercier,
who will miss the season with a knee injury. Woodson tied No. 1
Robinson, 2-2, on April 1 — no fooling — and has a marquee match with
No. 6 McLean on April 21.
3. Chantilly (5-0-1)
The
Chargers have outscored their opponents 20-2 this season, but 16 of
those goals came in the first three games. Chantilly faces No. 1
Robinson on the road on Friday.
4. Broad Run (5-0-1)
The Spartans went 24-0-0 last season en route to the Virginia AA State title and have five college signees: Holly King (Florida), Valerie Powell (Arkansas), Kelly Evans (Old Dominion), Caitlin Hunter (UNC-Wilmington) and Taylor Starr (Tusculum). Broad Run has outscored its opponents 14-2 this year.
5. Loudoun Valley (6-0-0)
The Vikings have torched their first six opponents, winning by a combined 23-1 margin.
6. McLean (6-0-0)
The
Highlanders have posted a Northern Region-best 30 goals this season,
while allowing just six, but a 15-0 season-opening win at Wakefield
skews that statistic. McLean faces South Lakes and Jefferson this week
before squaring off with No. 2 Woodson on April 21.
7. Oakton (5-0-0)
No
team has gotten within three goals of the Cougars this season as they
have outscored their opponents by a collective 28-2. Oakton closes its
season with four consecutive games teams either in the Top 10 or those
that also received votes.
8. Woodbridge (3-2-1)
The
Vikings knocked off defending state runner-up Battlefield, 4-0, earlier
this season, but fell to defending state champion No. 1 Robinson, 4-1,
on March 16. Woodbridge plays Potomac (Va.) and Forest Park this week.
9. West Springfield (5-1-1)
The
Spartans, who returned seven starters, have won five consecutive games
after opening the season with a 1-1 draw with Stone Bridge and a 1-0
loss to Centreville. During its winning streak, West Springfield has
outscored its opponents 13-0.
10. Washington-Lee (6-1-0)
The
Generals have marched out to a surprising start with amazing defense,
allowing only six goals through seven goals. But three of those allowed
came in a 3-0 loss to No. 9 West Springfield on March 25.

Also Receiving Votes — listed alphabetically
Battlefield (4-2-1)
Edison (5-1-0)
Heritage (4-2-1)
Herndon (5-2-0)

Boys’ Soccer: Blackburn Rovers FC 2, GFA Elite 0

By Phil Murphy
Senior Multimedia/Content Editor
Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area

*Click the links on the top-left for full video and photo coverage from Thursday’s games.*

With its tournament life at stake, Great Falls Elite rattled off repeated scoring chances against Blackburn Rovers FC.

Unfortunately for the team from Fairfax County, Va., however, the last line of English defense was true to form.

Blackburn goalkeeper Matthew Urwin had five saves — and was assisted by a pair of open-goal blocked shots by his back line — en route to a clean sheet and a 2-0 win for the Premiere League side at Georgetown University on Thursday, which locked up a berth in the Tiffany Cup championship.

“It’s always good,” Urwin said of his shutout. “If you keep the clean sheet, you don’t lose, do you? It’s always good to keep the clean sheet.”

While shutouts make losses impossible, wins require goals.

And in the sixth minute, Blackburn striker Jason Blanton — a U-17 England National Team call-up — earned one for the visitors on a free kick.

The one-goal lead held for the remainder of the first half, despite several threats to goal from GFA Elite.

The most menacing chance was an artful volley by midfielder Dylan Bowman — a U-17 Men’s National Team pool player — that Urwin frayed with a leaping left-handed punch in the 13th minute.

But it was not until the 61st minute that the club from Northwest England lengthened its margin.

Bowman made a long run down the left channel before firing a low shot that was kicked to the top of the box by GFA keeper Mark Bixler. Rovers midfielder Filip Pivkovski settled the rebound, dribbled to the end line and played a ball to midfielder James Knowles at the top of the six.

Knowles stretched the net with a smooth, right-footed strike, all but clinching a win and a championship game berth with Real Madrid CF at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Va., on Saturday at 11 a.m.

“It takes pressure of you,” said Urwin of Knowles’ insurance goal. “You still have to work hard, but it keeps pressure of you.

“That’s a bit better, isn’t it?”

Added Knowles, a Northern Ireland youth national team member: “It gives us more time to relax and we can bring players off, which gives us more time to relax for the final.”

GFA Elite beats local foe before taking on World

By Ryan Mink
rmink@digitalsports.com

Before Great Falls Academy Elite has to play some of the top teams amateur club teams from around the world, it got to face a familiar foe in the Freestate Soccer Academy from Bowie, Md.

The two teams have played four or five times in the past couple months. And according to forward K.C. Onyeador, GFA Elite has come out on top each time.

That pattern continued Monday as GFA Elite defeated its metro area foe, 2-0, at Trinity College in GFA’s first game in the International Amateur Soccer Tournament

Onyeador, who plays for Park View High School, scored his team’s second goal while National Pool player Dylan Bowman of James River broke what was a scoreless game with a  header goal three minutes into the second half.

“We hold the upper hand,” Bowman said of the rivalry with Freestate. “We knew we had some chances and knew we were going to get some second half goals. We just had to put them away.”

Bowman’s goal came off a cross from Robinson forward Koko Makumbi. The chipped cross found Bowman in traffic near the penalty stripe. His header wasn’t all that powerful but it was just inside the right post to give GFA a 1-0 lead.

“Dylan’s goal, that was a great goal,” Onyeador said. “The ball was over me and Dylan comes out of nowhere and puts it in the bottom corner.”

“Probably my first headed goal,” Bowman added.

Onyeador’s goal, off a nifty little pass from Bowman, was scored just 14 minutes later in the 62nd minute.

But now it’s on to literally more foreign competition for GFA Elite. The club will face Chivas de Corazon from Guadalajara, Mexico on Wednesday and Blackburn Rovers from Blackburn, England on Thursday.

“It’s good to get off to a good start because our next challenges are going to be pretty big,” Onyeador said.

GFA Elite Coach Ed Beach watched the two teams battle to a tie on Sunday.

“I was very, very, very impressed,” Beach said. “It seems they brought over their better players and we’ll have our hands more than full.”

Pachuca knocks off DC United Academy

By Ryan Mink
rmink@digitalsports.com

Pachuca Internationals was down a goal to rival D.C. United Academy Team at halftime and staring an early exit from the International Amateur Soccer Tournament.

But luckily for Pachuca, it’s a second-half team.

The Pachuca Internationals rallied with a goal just five minutes into the second half and the game-winning goal with five minutes left in regulation to win 2-1 Monday evening at the RFK Auxiliary Field.

“We weren’t too scared; we were just worried,” midfielder Skylar Olson said. “We knew we could come back because we always do.”

Christopher Makowski (Faith Christian Academy, Pa.) notched the game-winner on a header off a free kick from Nathaniel Howell (Sidwell Friends) and Olson (Wootton) scored the game-tying goal when he slid and collided with the keeper.

Makowski whipped out a forward front hand-spring to cap off the goal, a move he was planning on saving. But what better time than a huge goal in an international tournament.

“It was cool, a game-finisher,” Makowski said. “I just got lucky nobody was guarding me. I just took my time and hit it away.”

D.C. United had the run of play in the first half but Pachuca flipped the game in the second half and put several good runs together right at the start of the second half.

Pachuca, who lost its first game to El Deportivo Saprissa of San Jose, Costa Rica, will next face Real Madrid of Madrid, Spain on Thursday.

But for now, a winner over an academy team as prestigious as D.C. United is worth flipping over.

“It’s always good to win, but to win against an academy team, to be playing in an international tournament, it’s always a huge ego booster and morale booster,” Olson said.
