Football: Hayfield at Chantilly Preview

By Phil Murphy

**Click HERE to see other previews from around the Northern Region!**

Hayfield (3-1) at Chantilly (2-2)

Last Week: Hayfield beat Yorktown, 27-19; Chantilly lost at Woodson, 26-14

Current Playoff Seeding: Hayfield 4th Div. 5; Chantilly T-10th Div. 6

The only player in the Northern Region with multiple touchdowns in every game this season is Hawk senior running back Rayshawn Rigans.

He has 354 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns, he averages 15.2
yards per reception and has scored on 20-percent of his touches.

His carries have increased in every game this season and, unless
Chantilly puts Hayfield in a deep hole early, expect that trend to
continue.

Chantilly lost a heartbreaker last week at Woodson. It took a 14-7 on a 44-yard rushing touchdown by senior Mike Farris, but allowed 19 unanswered points in the final 8 minutes, 11 seconds, including a pair of touchdown runs over 55 yards.

Simply put, missed tackles like those that resulted in the Cavalier touchdown runs will prove fatal against the Hawks.

Joining Rigans in the Hayfield triple option are stud sophomore tailback Steve Lynch and senior quarterback Anton McCallum, who has a 4.46 40-yard dash. Collectively, the trio has scored 11 touchdowns of 25 yards or more in four weeks.

The Hawks’ 132 points are the most they have scored in four games since 2000, the last time they made the playoffs.

To regain its early-season momentum, Chantilly needs to take a page out
of the playbook of Hayfield’s Patriot District opponents in the years
before it joined the National District.

Those teams used superior size in the trenches — which the Chargers
have — to drain clock, keep the explosive Hawk offense off the field
and wear the defense down.

Hayfield, conversely, needs to force turnovers and give its offense as
many possessions as possible. The Chantilly passing game has no
touchdowns this year, but has thrown seven interceptions.

Keep an eye on McCallum when he lines up at free safety. He not only
has three interceptions in the last two weeks, but 117 return yards on
those picks.

The only time these teams have met in the last 12 years was in 2002. Chantilly won, 28-0.
